Finding immediate fame in the opening title sequence of Blake Edwards 1964 classic comedy The Pink Panther, the feline embodiment of the Swinging Sixties cool quickly become the star of his own animated shorts produced by the DePatie-Frelend Studio. Unlike the loud and manic characters of other animation studios, the Pink Panther was lithe and easygoing, and moved to the rhythm of jazzy theme music of the great Henry Mancini (Breakfast at Tiffany's). Usually thwarting the plans of a variety of uptight little men, the hep cat's fresh approach to cartoon comedy earned an Academy Award for his first solo effort: The Pink Phink (Best Animated Short Film, 1964) and remains the era's most iconic animation sensation. This collection of 20 cartoons are all mastered in HD and feature the original audio without laugh-tracks which were added to the television versions of the short films.

The Panther's Back and Pinker Than Ever (UPDATE 2/9: NOW WITH NOTES)
Kino and MGM bring you The Pink Panther Cartoon Collection Volume 1! What makes this (and the next 5 volumes) better that the Classic Cartoon Collection years back? Well for starters, new HD transfers for the first 20 cartoons and the best part...NO LAUGH TRACKS!!! That's right! This (and the next volumes to come) will be laugh track free as originally intended and released originally in theaters (though from what I've heard, laugh tracks for selected shorts might be available as an alternate audio option). Extras for this edition will include commentaries from animation historians such as Jerry Beck and Mark Arnold plus archival recording from Friz Freleng himself. So if you're a Pink Panther fan, buy this set on DVD and/or Blu-ray today.EDIT 2/9: OK, I have the set and while it's spectacular and still receives a high recommendation, the release unfortunately has a few faults:-Dial P For Pink on Kino's release is presented with low-pitched audio (and I think it's a frame or 2 slower than it should be, but Greg Ford said this is the speed of how the short ran originally). I can confirm this (I got permission) that this pitch problem is indeed an authoring issue.-Some of the commentaries are out of sync (most of them not by much but the last a little more noticeable). This is the following: Bob Kurtz and Jerry Beck's commentary for Dial P For Pink, and the commentaries for Pink Pajamas, Pickled Pink, Shocking Pink, Pink Panzer (also interesting tidbit, if you listen carefully during the climax with the commentary on, there is some new pieces of background music for the short that I didn't even know exist!), Pink Punch (probably), and Pink Blueprint.-The ending cue for Reel Pink (thank you Trevor DeChane) is from The Pink Panther Show. No one's fault on this though as the MGM release was like that too.I really REALLY suggest you ask Kino to do a replacement program featuring corrected discs for both DVD and Blu-ray. Great company as they are, they need to accountable for these errors and fix them. There's an old saying "The customer is always right." We're Kino 's customers and love them. Accidents happen, but these errors CAN and MUST be fixed and I will not rest until justice is done. They can't let these error go out uncorrected because they're afraid of losing money. Trust me, it's worth it and they'll make a lot us very happy if they do. Kino, if by any chance you're reading this, I ask you again please.Again regardless of these faults, I still recommend to you the fans to buy this release because one thing is clear; all the shorts are laugh track free.

The beginning of a classic
I watched this from the library as a kid and only owned the second collection. Now my second collection has been taken over by my cousin, so I got this for him for his birthday. He watches them both in order, laughing his head off, fairly regularly. So I’ll be collecting the rest of them slowly to gift them to him when they’re in stock.
