Inspired by the simplicity and utility that's synonymous with the Woolrich name, our wool stag shirt has been a customer favorite for generations. Front and back double yokes shed moisture for added warmth. Two chest pockets with button-close openings under the front yoke keep items in place. Hand-warmer pockets and adjustable cuffs. Unlined. Machine-washable wool.

Size and info
I am 6 ft tall, and 205 lbs. I normally wear a size 36 pants, and usually between a 42 and 44 chest size. The large size of this shirt jacket, fits me perfectly. Some might say I have slightly long arms, and the arms of this jacket are perfect for me.Is this item itchy? Of course it is, it is 80% wool. Some people might get confused with Merino wool, or alpaca wool which is extremely soft. But this is neither of those materials, therefore yes it is itchy.I have used thick wool blankets when camping, and they are definitely every bit of what people say they are. Warm, flame retardant, keep warm if wet, and have a bit of smell to them. However, this shirt jacket does not have any odor whatsoever. The craftsmanship of this item is perfect. The buttons are well sewn and the pockets are placed well. The only thing that disappoints me, is today outside it got up to 60 degrees. It has been in the teens and low 30s forever, and now I have this awesome shirt jacket to test...If you are worried about the Itchy part, perhaps one of the other shirt jackets with a higher percent of nylon or polyester would be good for you. And you don't want Merino or alpaca as an outside layer, because it would get shredded by tree branches and things.

Versatile article of clothing
The Woolrich Stag wool shirt/jacket is most comparable to the Woolrich Buffalo Check wool shirt. The fabric used in each is similar if not identical, and the sizing is close, at least for size XL. Both items have minimal lining, so it would be advisable to wear at least a base layer for maximum comfort. There are, however, several differences between the two items:* The Stag jacket is longer than the Buffalo Check shirt.* The Stag jacket is the same length all around, whereas the Buffalo Check shirt has slightly rounded tails.* The hem of the Stag jacket is formed by folding an inch of material back and sewing it in place, whereas the hem of the Buffalo Check shirt is folded back just enough to accommodate the bottom stitch.* The Stag jacket has yokes on the front and back shoulder that double the thickness of the jacket in those areas, whereas the Buffalo Check shirt has a panel of fabric on the back shoulder only.* The yokes on the Stag jacket are open on the bottom, whereas the panel on the Buffalo Check shirt is sewn all around.* The chest pockets on the Buffalo Check shirt have flaps over the top, whereas the yokes serve the same purpose for the chest pockets on the Stag jacket.* The Stag jacket also has two handwarmer pockets that the Buffalo Check shirt does not have.* The Buffalo Check shirt has a collar lining that seems to be 100% cotton, whereas the Stag jacket has a collar lining that is either full synthetic or cotton/synthetic. The Stag jacket also has the same lining on both sides of the front opening, behind the buttons on the right side and the button holes on the left side.* The buttons on the Stag jacket are substantially larger than the buttons on the Buffalo Check shirt. In short, the Stag jacket and the Buffalo Check shirt are in many ways interchangeable, but the Stag jacket has features that make it more suitable as a top layer, whereas the Buffalo Check shirt can be more easily used as a shirt with another layer worn on top of it.As a shirt, I prefer the feel of 100% wool shirts such as the Woolrich Bering shirt or the Pendleton Board shirt, and it's easier to tuck in the tails of a Bering shirt if you want. Certainly I don't see a difference between the care for the Stag jacket and for 100% wool shirts (machine wash cold with wool-safe detergent, line dry). The feel and heft of the Stag jacket fabric is similar to the feel and heft of my Filson Mackinaw Cruiser jacket, but the Stag jacket is shorter than the Filson and doesn't have all the pockets that the Filson does. I guess that this is a roundabout way of saying that the Stag jacket occupies a niche between a regular shirt and a full-blown wool coat.Whether you go with the Stag jacket or with a 100% wool shirt would come down to usage. If you want a shirt that could be used as a top layer, you might want to go with the Stag jacket with its extra length and its handwarmer pockets. If you just want a shirt, a 100% wool shirt would be nicer.

which would have been fine except that the yoke covering the upper chest and ...
Having read several reviews that suggested the shirt jacket ran much larger in size than described by the size chart, I ordered a small. Unfortunately, it was too small and I had to return it. In my opinion, the chart is correct, at least for that particular size, and I should have ordered a medium. The wool fabric is quite heavy, which would have been fine except that the yoke covering the upper chest and back doubles the layer of material. This would be too hot for a three season jacket in California. In a cold climate, it might be perfect. The coat is a little long but not annoyingly so, and it would keep the derriere warm in winter. If I were living in my native State of N.Y., it would be a great jacket.

Fantastic product! Just too long for my short, wide frame.
I am 5'8, 230lbs. 47" chest, 40" waist, 16" neck, and 35" sleeve. I have a stocky build with a wide skeletal frame, a decent gut and slightly shorter than average length arms. It makes it hard to find clothes that aren't a compromise somewhere. This shirt jacket was way too large for me. The sizing chart suggested that a XL was appropriate, but the length was too much and the chest was too loose. My outstretched fingers didn't touch the bottom of the hand-warmer pockets and the sleeves extended past the middle knuckle.I returned the XL and tried a L. The chest and shoulders fit me perfectly. Unfortunately, the length was still too much. I could touch the bottom of the pocket, but just barely. The sleeves looked like an accordion. I was tempted to get it tailored to fit my sleeves, but opted to look elsewhere. It's unfortunate, because I loved everything else about it. The color looked great (especially on me with my green eyes) and the material and craftsmanship felt like it would last a decade or more.It was a bit itchy, but not beyond what I expected for a wool shirt and only noticeable when thinking about it.Be wary of the sizing chart. Even though the chart states "Men's Height 5'8" to 6'," the larger (wider) sizes add too much length for us shorter people.

Runs Big but Looks Great
This jacket is a hybrid between a shirt and a coat, with the collar, lack of lining, and sleeve structure of the former and the cut, sizing, and length of the latter. The mantle (yoke) is also a nice touch. It is cut generously (I am 5'11'', 145 lbs., and the small fits well over a thick sweater), but drapes nicely even on a skinny frame like mine. The sleeves are a little too big around, but not annoyingly so. The jacket is unlined, but it's pretty warm nonetheless. It's also nice that the jacket is machine washable (80% wool, 20% nylon).

Shacket-astic!
This is THE warm hunter’s shirt jacket. The real thing. Very thick, warm wool - good enough for mild winter days with a sweater. Gorgeous red and black buffalo check pattern. Worth every penny. Go ahead and try to find a bad review on this, I challenge you! It fits big, so you are safer ordering a size down. I am 6’4 and 190 lbs with long arms and a large fits me a bit baggy, which is how I like it. I loved this jacket as soon as I got it out of the package. It feels great. I love the warmth and feel of real wool. I suggest wearing something with long sleeves under this, or your arms will likely be itchy against the wool. Although you do have the right to bare arms.Interestingly the Buffalo Check pattern was developed by Woolrich in the late 1800s for their work wear. They called it buffalo check because the weaver had a herd of buffalo. Hunters liked it because deer can’t see red, and the high contrast black and light helped blend a hunter in with surrounding vegetation, while keeping them safe from being shot by another hunter. The pattern migrated quite a bit. In North America, the first colours for this pattern were red and black, and in New Zealand, the first colours were green and black. If you like buffalo check, also check out the Pendleton line, they also make nice stuff.

I'm really happy with it
Bought this in new grey on sale (price down to $55 don't pay full price). I'm really happy with it. I typically wear a 2XL in most brands, but based on other Woolrich products bought this in XL. The fit of the XL is excellent, it looks good on its own, and I have room for a chunky sweater underneath. I rated it as somewhat large because XL fits like a pretty typical 2XL. XL is 26.5 inches pit to pit, and 31 inches long. I wear 17.5 34 / 35 shirts and the sleeve length is good (for a jacket). The wool is nice and thick, it's scratchy over just a T-shirt, but I'd pretty much never wear it without a long sleeve shirt under, and it may soften a bit with use and washing. The lining at the neck is a nice feature. Pockets are perfectly placed and my hands automatically slip into them when I'm wearing it. I plan on wearing this from about 10C to -2C ish as a primary jacket, and with layering down to about -10C.

Great fall/spring jacket!
I have this jacket in hunt red and in new grey. I thought that new grey was a solid colour but up close it is stripped dark grey and light grey. It's hard to tell that from the photo on amazon. I'm attaching a photo of it up close. The last thing I wanted to mention was that when worn with only a t-shirt it's a bit itchy on the arms as that it is a heavy weight wool. If that would be an issue for you I'd recommend the bering wool shirt or the Alaskan wool shirt (both from Woolrich).

This jacket is great - can be usedfor work or casual wear
This jacket is great - can be usedfor work or casual wear. Great for aroundd the campfire and layering. Thick material, and the pockets are useful. I'm 6 foot 2 and 180 lbs. I'm always leery about ordering clothes online, especially shirts because I find either the arms are too short if the body fits good, or the arms are good and the chest is way too large. This jac-shirt has good sizing for me in a medium. Isn't very tight, but is long enough. Relaxed fit.

Otherwise an awesome
Proportions are off. Shirts always fit me but these sleeves are too long and cuffs are too small/ tight to button around average wrist. Otherwise an awesome shirt
