Too Big for Diapers (Sesame Street) (Too Big Board Books)

Great for the young toddler
I've begun potty training my daughter at 17 months, and she loves this book! The story is short and to the point, (great for those of us who know potty training *is* possible for a young toddler!). It's easily short enough for even a 1-year-old to not lose interest in. She doesn't know who Ernie is, so it wouldn't really matter who the character is, but if your child is an Ernie or Sesame Street lover I would imagine that would be a plus! I LOVE that Ernie washes his hands "with sudsy soap" at the end of the book, something our daughter loves to climb up and do after using the toilet. It might be too simple and short if your child is 3 or 4 years old and still in diapers. I also love that it is a board book, because although she's pretty good with not destroying paper pages, it will easily last for the next few children. It's also easy to substitute the words you are using or plan to use with your child (for example, I use "go potty" and "on the toilet" rather than calling the toilet a "potty" so the act and the object aren't confused). She also loves to see that Ernie is weariing diapers in the beginning (just like her!); I do wish there was mention of "big boy pants" or underwear in there somewhere, but I can easily work that in since she has no idea what the words on the page really say.

Big help
My 2-1/2 year old son loved this book. It arrived on day 3 of our potty training effort, and it really seemed to motivate him to poop on the potty, which he had been fearful of, although he had been great at going pee pee on the potty and was already staying dry all day. This book and the one called "The Potty Book for boys" are both very good, I thought, in that regard. (I have two other potty books, but I can't remember their names. One has a noise button that makes flushing sounds.) I agree with those who say the wording is fine about having to "go" etc. without specific words - - but, let me say further that, "Hello, parents! Unless your potty "trainee" can actually read the words in the book, or unless you have so many different readers of it that you can't enforce the reading of a consistent version of it, you can MAKE UP, skip or substitute whatever words you want![.]!" I have changed "pee" to "pee pee" or added discussion of "poop" instead of just "going potty" in this book and others. Just make it consistent every time you read it, or they'll figure that out very quickly. Repetition is key. Good luck, potty trainers. FYI - - we are on day 8 now, and he is making all pee pee and all poops in the potty (the big toilet actually with a toilet ring), except we do still put him in his diaper for afternoon nap and nighttime.

Good, but wish it had more Step-By-Step pictures
Good book, but I wish it had more step by step sort of pictures with directions on using the potty. It is a general book. It shows Ernie tugging down his pants, but doesn't show him actually sitting on the potty. The book also shows what not to do (i.e. use too much toilet paper), but it is more of a broad theme.... First he has diapers, then he gets a surprise box, "Oh look it's a potty!", pull down pants, wash hands, don't forget to go to the potty if you get the urge while playing, and now he's a 'big boy'.. YAY. La di dah. My hunt continues for a Sesame Street potty book - or any book really - that details more of the steps involved. My 2-year old likes the book though, so I guess that's something :-P

Great introduction for young ones!
Our now 18 month old son has had this for a few months now, and it has been a favorite of his. He started asking for Ernie every night before bed. We aren't really using it for potty training- we might start trying that in a few months- but it's a great introduction for little ones. It is very short and simple, and he loves the pictures (I think because they're photos and not illustrated?). I figure it can't hurt to get him familiar with the idea of using the potty, and it's a super quick read. Even if it's not effective for training, it is good for entertainment, and the pictures are great! We also have another Sesame Steet potty book "Potty Time!", and he loves that too. It's a little longer than this one, and they get to flush at the end!

A perfect introduction!
My son was showing some of the signs that he might be ready for his own potty, so I bought this book to introduce the basics. I was really impressed. It explains how babies wear diapers, but when they grow up, they use a potty. It also illustrates important points like not using too much toilet paper and washing your hands afterwards. It's a simple story, so it doesn't go into a lot of detail. There's no discussion of "poo-poo" or "pee-pee." It just uses the generic term "having to go." But I don't think that's a bad thing. This book isn't meant to be the only training tool you use. I think it's a great introduction to potty training. And my son can't get enough of it. He wants to read it over and over. You'll have it memorized within a week.

My son loved this book, he would read it over and over. I even passed this book to my cousin for her babies.

Sesame Street saves a lot of frayed nerves.
This was the last board book needed for the difficult task of potty training. After numerous videos and books on the subject and no results ,exceptone upset lil man. We found out that little man has autism. He used his car pottyand All of a sudden at 3 yrs. he went right from wearing training pants and pull upsto using the big potty by himself., except for needing a lil clean up help.

My son likes this book
My 2-year-old son really enjoys reading about Ernie using the potty. My only feedback would be that I wish the book used more descriptive terms for what Ernie does in the bathroom. For example, the book states, "When Ernie has to go" and "...sits on the potty and goes." I think it would be more developmentally appropriate if the book describes what it means when Ernie "has to go" or "goes" (e.g., "When Ernie has to use the potty, he sits on the potty and goes pee pee." Anyway, I would still recommend this book for toddlers who are starting to develop a curiosity about potty training.

My son says he is too big for diapers now lol
Nice book! I got this book for my son when he started potty training at 2.5 and “potty book for boys” book. Both books very different, pretty much the opposites in the writing style. This book has shorter story, so possibly great for kids that don’t have too much patience for long stories, the other book has a nice long story. My son loved both books and it worked!!! Now he says that he is too big for diapers lol

2nd time around
We tried another potty book with elmo, it didn't seem to have any effect. We decided to try again with another book and purchased this one, it wasn't too long after reading it a few times that our child gauged interest in using the potty. Could of been lucky or maybe the book did influence our daughter to start using the potty.

Cute book for introducing a new skill
My son loves this book and makes me read it again and again. It was so inexpensive but it's invaluable because it's an easy and simple way to introduce the concept of a potty to my two year old.

Helped talk my toddler into using the potty in around a week
This book got my toddler potty trained in about a week, as soon as she figured out that she was "too big for diapers" she was very keen on using the potty instead. She was probably overdue for potty training, admittedly you have to pick the right time. I have now passed this one along to a friend with a younger child because we don't need it anymore. Definitely worth trying.
