Will this replace a normal ceiling switch, which switches only the live wire?

The occupancy sensor is used to provide the automatiive detection of movement for turning on/off the lght. If the occupancy sensor is installed for a light with an on/off switch, a bridge wire is required to link the live "L" wire (inside the switch) in order to bypass the switch. Thus the occupany sensor may replace the switch at this way. Please note that to seek help from registrated electrician for the installation/set up.

Does it have a 40 minute maximum ?

Yes, the timer range of PM400 is around 5 seconds to 40 minutes. The timer will start to count down of the preset time duration (i.e. 40 minutes) from the last motion detection. Thus, if there is motion being kept detected by the occupancy sensor, the light will be "ON" continuously from first detection till the timer duration is expired .
