This tool makes the use of a J-roller seem like folly. While designed primarily for use when using hot glue, it is equally effective in preventing trapped air when using contact cement. It is expensive, but a 2 x 8 sheet of veneer being destroyed will cost more along with ruining the substrate. If you intend to do a fair amount of veneering, it is probably worth the price.

Does the job
This veneer hammer is my first. I've done a lot of veneering with a vacuum bag and veneer glue. I used this veneer hammer with TiteBond Hide Glue, which works at room temperature. I was able to achieve results on par with a vacuum bag, but with a catch. The hide glue, applied to both substrate and veneer, was tacky enough to start with. This veneer hammer smoothed the veneer against the surface. I used both the wide flat section and the more focused square "pointy" end. The veneer should be heartwood side down but my veneer was taped sections with one strip heartwood side up. When wet by the hide glue, it bowed upwards, rather than down. I used the veneer hammer to get that section flat and against the substrate but it did keep popping up a bit. I ended up putting the piece veneer-side down with weights on it overnight. The veneer dried overnight and the resulting job was nice and tight against the substrate.

Kunz vs Picard
Ordered both to compare. They are the exact same veneer hammer. FYI, order the least expensive. They are identical.

Works great for veneer
Very good quality tool. Works great for getting lots of pressure when veneering. Much better than J-roller or the phenolic plastic squeegee style. Using with contact adhesive on large to very large panels in custom big boat.

Great Veneer Hammer (if you just have one)
This is a great veneer hammer if you just have one. I’d say it’s priced a little high for, but is well made in fit and finish. Requires no polishing to get started; maybe but for waxing the head with some monocrystaline or carnuba wax. You don’t own a vacuum system larger enough for big panels/etc and have used mine with both plain and paper backed veneer, and with hide, PLA, and water activated powder resin wood glues (Cascamite/DAP brands). Would recommend for larger panels surely and get far better results than with a J roller alone.
