Showcase Presents: Aquaman, Vol. 1

The Beginning of the King of the Sea
his book collects the early Silver Age Aquaman stories from 1959-62. This contains a variety of stories ranging from 6-13 page stories published as back-up features in Adventures Comics, Detective Comics (believe it or not), World's Finest Comics, guest appearances in the Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane books, the full length try-outs for Aquaman in Showcase #32 and #33 and the first six issues of Aquaman's own comic. There are some landmark stories in the comic, particularly the Silver Age Aquaman origin story and the introduction of Aqualad. The stories themselves are pretty bare bones. Atlantis is in the book, but there are only a couple stories involving it and Aquaman, while King of the Seas, has no actual political power. The only interaction with the rest of the Nascent DC Universe is seen in crossovers with Superman's friends, and a couple of cases of Aquaman stopping large chunks of Kryptonite from making it to market. The only recurring character introduced was Quisp. The stories have a laid back feel. There's a sense that they're just trying to be fun adventures and they succeed at that. They're rarely as silly as some of the DC books and never boring. The art is solid and overall, this is just a pleasant uncomplicated read that's great for a young child or just anyone wanting to have a few pages of sea adventures with the King of the Sea.

Good Finny Fun!
Just what you expect from 60’s aquaman comics. Whales stop planes from crashing, and swordfish fight animal trainers. Aquaman has the authority over water-buffaloes simply because water is in the name. Aquaman is ridiculously wonderful in this novel, and these bite sized stories serve as great light reading in my free time. This is my first experience with old Aquaman comics (I’ve mostly just read new 52 and rebirth) and I’m almost appreciating those a little bit more than I already did because of the silliness (and honestly, lameness) of his character in this book. If you’re looking for a serious comic book with compelling story, this book is not for you, but if you just want to enjoy lighthearted hijinks with aquatic creatures, than maybe check this out?

Aquatic tales of wonder...
If you love aquatic life at its extreme in comics, then this is the one for you !! This is filled with cute quaint tales of the man we call Aquaman and Aqualad! I highly recommend this as you can't go wrong with it. Thank you so much !!

It is stupid and I love it
It is stupid and I love it. But what else do you expect from the silver age? Really, the fun in reading this comics is seeing how bizarrely stupid they can be. This even includes the story of how Aquaman controlled a Water Buffalo because it has "water" in its name. If you expect the darker and/or smarter stories of the bronze and modern ages, you'll be dissapointed. But if you want some good old silver age fun, this is for you.

New Reader
I'm sure that some people are interested in how this collection fares to absolutely new readers as opposed to people who have read this more than 20 years ago. The stories are cheesy and filled with utter nonsense, such as Aquaman commanding Octopi to row a boat or having eels straighten themselves into makeshift stretchers. However, these stories are fun to read and never last long enough to wear out their welcome. All in all, I would recommend this to people not looking for comics that are too intellectually deep (as these stories were intended for children) but instead doesn't mind some light campy entertainment.

Fun to read
Brought back memories from the sixties.

Backstory
I didn't start reading Aquaman until the mid-1960s, so these stories are more history than memory to me. Still, it's a good package, and you just can't go wrong with the work of Nick Cardy. Advisory: there are virtually no female characters of any kind in this volume, so it's not a prime item for collectors of Cardy Women.

Excellent collection
Aquaman has never been one of the top DC characters but I have always enjoyed many of the adventures with AquaLad and Mera etc. This collection is in black and white and in many ways, probably better for it. The adventures are from a variety of DC comics. There was an omnibus collection announced for Aquaman and hopefully at some point that will be released but until that time, this showcase is an enjoyable addition to my DC comics
