They work
I installed these on the back of my Monoprice whole-house audio amplifier in-wall remote control keypad. Shortly after taking this picture, I cut the legs down to make it fit better. But it fit perfectly into the three-terminal wire block for incoming IR sensor. Then, I glued & taped an IR emitter on top of the head and it all works great!

Coupled with an Arduino and the IRRemote library, you can use most any IR remote to control your DIY projects. I am surprised how well these worl.
