Awesome clock
I ordered a black one and a white one and ended up sending back the black one and buying another white one because the white one just looks so surgical and visibly striking. The instructions aren't very clear about exactly where "on" and "off" is so I'll save you about 15 minutes. Put the "fin" that you grasp with your fingers to turn the cap, VERTICAL. With that fin straight up and down the clock is running. You will meet a little resistance but then it will snap into place. One thing I did notice is that not every minute is 60 seconds. I timed with my stopwatch. Sometimes the leaf will fall in 58 or 59 seconds, some times in 61 or 62 seconds, most of the time in 60 seconds. I attribute this to the fact that the clock is mostly mechanical and relies on ultra precision cut leafs. In which case it would cost a fortune. But they all average each other out and every morning I come in and it's exactly on time with my computer. BE ADVISED: There is good reason to use Carbon Zinc batteries, and it's not because they want you to buy more batteries. Found this info on a watch and clock enthusiasts bulletin board: Although the various types of D batteries are all 1.5 volts, they have DIFFERENT CURRENT PROFILES. One type may provide relatively constant current until it suddenly dies. Another will be constant for most of its life but in the final third begin to decline slowly until it can no longer power the clock. NiCADS have a different profile altogether. But here's the real good reason, and this came straight from the blog host watchmaker/clockmaker: inexpensive clock motors made in China don't usually have a current regulator, it relies on the battery to provide the required flow, and an alkaline could burn out the clock way before its expected life. Don't even think about a Lithium. Rely on the carbon zinc battery not to push thru too much current at once.

Perfect gift
I purchased 5 of these 1 for myself and 4 for gifts. This item went over great I love it is so easy to tell time from across the room. It's very retro stylish and every one who sees it compliments it and wants one. The D size battery is holding up well so far all 5 cl8cks have been going since December of 23 and all are still going strong. The manufacturer stated the D battery should last 6 months. Battery is not included.
