Tony GroomDiver: A Royal Navy and Commercial Diver's Journey Through Life, and Around the World

Top 3 books of all time.
One of the best books I've ever read. Couldn't put it down, but didn't want it to end.I'm a SCUBA instructor, and am training to be a Commercial Diver. I came across this, as there is very little literature about for CD, and hoped this would be a good insight. There is not much in the book about actual CD work. But reading about Tony's life and experiences during his Navy career, is both hilarious, and compelling. I salute you Tony for your Falklands work. Amazing! As for training the African divers!!! Fantastic stuff, my favorite part of the book.So in summary, not what I was hoping for. But it turned out to be so much better than that. 5* Plus it's written in such a way, you don't need to have any diving experience to appreciate it. Its about a man and his experiences, some of which involves diving, not diving and a man.

Revealing
Got the book because I knew nothing about diving. Found it a really interesting read, and a revelation about the ordeal of divers in the Falklands War, and thereafter.

Not just for divers.
No one could write this book unless they had been there and experienced that kind of life. Tony Groom is one of life's silent heroes. This book contains an eye witness account of life in the forces. A story of laughter, sadness, honesty, doubt, bravery and truth. I take my hat off to him.

It's a very good read, well done Tony.
Having served in the Falklands with the RAF, all be it after the war, it brought back some great memories of my time there. Also memories of my training with the RAF. I really enjoyed the book.

Fantastic book which 'jack' will love.
This book will strike a cord with all serving and retired RN personnel. Absolutely hilarious in places which 'jack' will relate too. An interesting glimpse into the Falklands conflict from a naval perspective. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down.

Great read....
Just finished reading this book and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tony Groom's style is at once informative and quite self-deprecating, which is a nice change nowadays from all the blowhards out there! Clearly the author paints a very honest picture of this little known profession, both of his time in the Royal Navy and as a commercial diver. My father was both a US Navy diver and commercial diver for over 30 years and actually worked many saturation dives in the 1970s in the same North Sea oil fields described in the book, so I come to the subject with a solid understanding of the field. Still, the author covered many things I did not know and I can appreciate even more how hard my fathers chosen career was. Also, as a currently serving paratrooper in the U.S. Army, I found the military chapters of the book spot on. You definitely get a great sense of how tight the camaraderie is with such a small elite unit like the clearance divers. The photographs are also a welcome change for a non-fiction book of this nature, too often these types of books come with no photo's or illustrations and this one has both, and good one's at that! In summary, a well written, educational and humorous portrait of one's man's very interesting experiences in a world few will ever experience.
