Q: Can you see out of the mask

You can see out of the mask pretty well actually. It looks alittle like seeing out of sunglasses but with hazy filter? Either way you can see pretty well out of it, I was even able to wear it over my glasses to see better, though odd looking.

Q: How do you ask for an XL?

I think they're one size fits all. I have an XL sized head and this fit fine

Q: Can I paint on the mask?

I’m a cosplayer, and I have tested it before. With puffy paint, yes it can stick to the fabric but cracks over time. What I would do is stretch it over a mannequin head, pin it with sewing needles, then paint on the desired look you want. I do Spider-Man, so when I have on the lenses, I always put it inside out and cute holes where the eyes are. Then I start on the paint.
