Perfect Lighting - better than all the rest!
Several companies make Lighting Sets for Lego 21340 Tales of the Space Age, and I carefully reviewed each one. This is the ONLY kit that offers maximum lighting for each of the four models. It has clear instructions, and the finished result is spectacular!

Works great!
Was a bit hesitant to buy this because of the reviews but this product is genuinely good to go!The lights all work perfectly, the sensitivity is great, the instructions are perfect and it looks amazing!

Son loved it
Son, really enjoyed this lighting kit although it is easily broken if you aren’t general with it.

Parts broken on arrival, avoid.
I have built a few light sets and they look amazing. I got this for my sons set as it was the only one available at the time, never used this company before. Unfortunately the very first part is already disconnected and so useless. Maybe the other 7 bags work fine but we'll never know. The company provides a brochure saying loads of support, but they don't publish any contact details. Unfortunately we started making this over 30 days after purchase which is fair enough, but disappointing there is no support available. Maybe someone from the supplier will see this and get in contact and supply a new part. Happy to update the review if so, but my advice is stay clear.

This was bought as part of present.

Too fragile
Seemed pretty easy to install watching the instruction youtube video. The power pack that needs 3 AA batteries is totally useless and it only lights up if you have the usb dongle connected to a permanant power source like a bulky power bank. The micro small connectors wires came out of the tiny plugs by the time i finished which made it useless if you didnt have a tiny soldering iron to keep in place. 20 pound wasted as it went straight into the bin.

Not the best……

Tricky to understand and assemble but almost essential for the Space Age Kit
Lighting kit for Lego kit Tales of the Space Age 21340My partner bought this kit for my nephew. I have been testing it.It was not obvious from the on-line advertising for the plastic kit on the Lego box reads “18+”. I think the plastic kit would be very disappointing without the lighting kit, but the lighting kit is quite fiddly to get going. This is partly because the online pdf instructions are a poor translation from Chinese, they contain mistakes and include unnecessary unclear information which adds confusion. The instructions state that “Installation requires a lot of patience and great observation”. This is very true. It came as a surprise that the LEDs in this lighting kit are sound triggered. Thus the LEDs are triggered on when the microphone on the sound module control board picks up sounds. Before buying this lighting kit and ideally before buying the plastic kit I recommend that you read the online PDF lighting kit instructions or watch the video first. The complexity of the kit combined with the poor explanations and mistakes might put you off unless you have access to someone who has some experience with electronics or has patience and good logical reasoning. Go to www.lightingmanuals.com and then page GC476. The manual includes over 200 pictures spread over 41 pages. Examples of the instructions include: “Each components is Manual customization”. For “golden needles” read “gold pins”. For “expansion board.shown as blow”, read “expansion board shown below”. Another confusing and incorrect instruction reads: “….board, plug the plug of the battery box to the same socket in the expansion board to power the suit as well.” What they mean by this is: “connect the battery box to the power input socket on the sound control module board”. Thus by “suit” they mean “assembly” or “kit”. There are five very small printed circuit boards. There is a “sound control module” printed circuit board and four much smaller identical power “expansion” boards. Power distribution or extension boards would be a more explanatory description. The sound control module board has a microphone, a power input socket, a power output socket and a three position switch. These each have four sockets on them. One socket on each of these boards is for the power input and the other three sockets on each board are power output sockets to power the LEDs. If these four small boards had been called power distribution or extension boards their function would have been a bit clearer. The instructions read that the kit takes a lot of power. Not really. The box states that it needs 5V, current 20 mAh. Firstly mAh (milli Ampere hours) is not a unit of current mA (milli Amperes or just milli Amps) is. Assuming they mean 20mA then the power required is 5V x 20mA = 100mW. Three AA cells should last for days with this current drain. Even longer if you switch off at the battery box when you don’t want the lights to come on. Using the battery box will get the kit going but at a later date you might want to swap this for a larger capacity source such as a “power bank” or a mains powered charger with a USB socket of the type used to charge mobile phones, iPads etc.The illustration labelled “With USB to interface AAA battery box” is not the same as what is included in the kit. In the kit the battery box wires are terminated with a very tiny white plastic plug, not a USB plug. The kit is correct, it’s the illustration that is misleading. The plugs and sockets are polarized so they cannot be fitted the wrong way round, unless a great deal of force is used. A pair of tweezers is provided in the box but I found it easier to use my fingers to insert the plugs into the sockets. Three AAA cells are required for the battery box but were not included. What a shame the battery box was not sized to take AA cells which would have doubled the battery life at the same cost with a negligible size increase. The text for the sound control module mentions “Module sensitivity adjuster” later called “module sensitive regulator”. It’s just a three position switch. The instructions continue: “There are three gears,1,2and3”. This should read “There are three sound loudness or sensitivity settings: soft, in-between and loud”. Position 1 is the most sensitive setting and position 3 is the least sensitive setting. The instructions continue: “The three decibels are 25dB,50dB,90dB.” All we need to know is that one setting the LEDs are triggered on by soft sounds, the other extreme switch position requires much louder sounds to trigger then on and the middle switch position enables the LEDs to be triggered on by an in-between sound level. 25dB roughly corresponds to the loudness of whispering, 50dB to a conversation and 90dB to the loudness of a power tool. For the record a decibel is a power ratio, and is a measurement unit used by electronics and sound engineers. Introducing dBs just adds confusion.
