Auto-play, but terrible high frequencies - can barely hear Swift nesting calls.
Bought for playing Swift calls, for attracting birds to new nest sites.Operation is great, unit will start playing back, from first track on USB stick (then loops), when power is connected. So a simple mains timeswitch could schedule calls morning and evening.Unfortunately the high frequency performance is terrible. The unit will play both MP3 and WAV (Windows PCM) files, but the performance was just as bad using either. The calls are there, but can hardly be heard for a warbling buzz modulation produced by the unit. Imagiine a squeaky saw and crunching glass, being played in time with each call.Audio would be almost acceptable for playing boom-box music in a noisy veichle, but is not "hi-fi".Ruled out anything else being the cause: Tried two PSUs and and a 12V car battery, and two sets of speakers.Playing the same file (off phone) through the aux input did make a very slight improvement. While same setup, but using an old PC speaker amp instead, played just fine.Swift calls consist mostly of high frequencies (mostly above 3kHz).Images shows source ( mono .wav) file at top, with recording from unit below (recorded direct, not via speakers & mic).Waveform image:- 4 calls; playback at medium volume (sounding about as loud as old% watt PC amp).In pauses between calls the buzz/warble stops.Spectrum image: Single call; playback at minimum volume (barely audible on speaker connected to other amp channel). The spectrum shows artifacts between about 0-1000Hz (the extra blue line across bottom present in recording). While the energy is lower than that in the call, it sounding louder is probably down to human hearing. So although it might sound fine to swifts, I dont wan't to annoy my neighbours with the buzzing warble.I'm guessing problem is mostly down to a poor class D amp design, so won't bother trying a replacement.
