First Steps: Fundamental Endings
J**Y
Slightly misleading title, but excellent for what it is.
Having "First Steps" in the title implies that this is for beginners; having "Fundamental" in the title implies this is about mainly theoretical endgames. Both of these implications are at least partially incorrect. This book contains many more _practical_ (real game or game-like) positions clearly explained in both words and variations (but without overwhelming analysis) than I have seen in any other endgame book at this level. Lots of nice Capablanca, Fischer, and even Carlsen goodies are featured. By "this level" I mean perhaps something like 1200-1400 at the low end, what might be called "advanced beginner" or "beginning intermediate." So great stuff, but not really "first steps."Aside from that, there are occasional nods to the beginner, but these are uneven. For example, mate with the queen v lone king, and knowledge of the basic opposition are assumed (not covered), but then square of the pawn _is_ covered. Corresponding squares are included, but not key squares in K+1 v K endings. King routes and blocked pawn positions are hardly mentioned. (Thankfully, both Lucena and Philidor are covered.)Maybe minor quibbles. But I think this excellent book could be further improved to serve rank beginners if some of these more basic theoretical omissions, particularly in pawn endgames, were included. Then the book would live up to its title better, and be a more complete work.
