Learning To Weave

Absolutely brilliant. Weaving novice and thos is exactly what I needed. Step by step instructions very clearly laid out, written clearly simply in a conversational manner. Perfect.

I am a self taught weaver. Mostly through this book since moving on from a RHL. This has everything I need plus more. Everything is very clearly explained. One of the best weaving books I have. I still haven't grown out of it. I am still learning lots from it. Really good book. It's constantly downstairs by my loom. Warping up is particularly well covered. Back to Front - Front to Back.. It covers looms with 4 to 8 shafts. Double Weave is better covered by the book of that name. Deborah choses to interleave the warps from the different layers. Horses for courses I suppose. However if you want value for money, you can't beat this book. Well written. Clear. Plenty of suggested practise exercises too.

I bought this book when I got my 8 shaft loom as a complete novice. It was fantastic and gave very clear instructions with alternative ways of doing things. I particularly liked the way she anticipated problems so you could avoid making them. She also gives boxes at the side so that once you have done things a few times, if you need a reminder you don't have to read the whole lot again but can just go to the boxes as an aid memoire. Once you have the basics she goes on to describe more complex methods. My only slight criticism is that some of the black and white phots are not very clear but this didn't cause me any difficulties in understanding what I had to do.

Actually I bought this book in error. I really wanted a book about hand weaving on a small frame as a beginner. However, I did read through this book which give me some tips which i can use for small hand weaving. Lots of information which can easily be understood. Also lots of pictures which for me helps with understanding what is actually being told. Very interesting to learn about material weaving for additional projects. So although this book was not what I was looking for it was still interesting and easy to read. Just don't buy this unless you have a loom!

I did some very basic loom weaving as a child (over fifty years ago) and have just succumbed to temptation and bought a small four-shaft loom. This book provides a really helpful guide to everything new weavers (and the more experienced) need to know. In addition to step-by-step guides as to how to warp from back to front and from front to back, there are suggested threading sequences to enable different sizes of yarn to be threaded through a reed and advice on equipment and yarn choice. For the more experienced there are sections on twills, lace weaves, honeycomb, overshot, double-weave and getting to grips with reading drafts and block patterns Deborah Chandler's book is a mine of very useful information presented in a very clear and concise way. I shall be returning to it on a regular basis.

After a short weaving course I wanted something to read that would reinforce the lessons that I have had but not confuse the hell out of me, this was the book that absolutely fitted the bill. Set up in individual lessons, it takes you through the whole process in an easy to understand manner and is incredibly well illustrated with both photos and drawings. The processes are shown using a mixture of looms four shaft table, as well as the bigger floor loom. The weaving itself takes you from tabby to overshot and all stations in between. Genius Book.

It is so easy to follow the instructions in this book. Lots of people will tell you to start weaving on a rigid heddle loom but this book makes using a 4sharf loom easy. I had not woven anything since childhood then it was on a toy loom now I have warped and started to weave a scarf all in a weekend. You do need the book by your side but if you follow it to the letter everything works. I think I will be using this book for a long time as there are lots of information I will use years in the future. It's the best

I bought this thinking it was really a beginners guide as I had just bought a hand loom. It's actually a book about four shaft weaving looms. Nice book and I'm sure it's useful for somebody but it's not at all clear from the description what it is. I have returned my copy.

Este libro cubre mucha materia en torno a los distintos telares y tejidos que se pueden obtener. Empieza con detalles básicos, no dando nada por sabido. Explica los motivos y criterios en los que basa sus descripciones y podría usarse como una guía para principiantes y como un libro de consulta para personas con más conocimiento. Un básico en cualquier biblioteca si te interesan los tejidos y cómo se hacen.

Deborah's book is well laid out and very methodical in presentation. It's a great resource for the inexperienced weaver.

This book informative and easy to understand, with clear explanations of complex topics, with great illustrations and diagrams. It is worth the price is an essential weaving resource. The book covers basic weaving on large looms and different warping methods. It starts off with a very brief introduction to looms and ancillary tools needed by the weaver. Then it provides a very detailed discussion, complete with many pictures, of how to warp the loom, then leads the reader through a home-study course, starting off with a simple weave sample. Throughout, the author explains the details of how to perform each step, what problems might arise, how to prevent them from doing so, and how to fix problems that do arise. It is a good resource for beginners.
