Q: does this work for lifting bagels out of the poaching liquid?

I don’t see why not. I use it for pasta and fried fish but I would think it can lift bagels too. It has a nice balance and of good quality.

Q: How big are the holes? Has anyone ever tried using this for beachcombing etc?

The holes are 3/8" octagons for the most past, some are a tad bigger and some are smaller. The diameter of the top ring is 5" so it's not all that big a strainer.
