The One That Got Away: A DI Heather Filson Novel

Brilliant
I wasn't sure what to expect with this. I love the Logan series and didn't like Heather although in the last book that she was in, I had thawed towards her somewhat. It was as I expected in that she is not a team player so when a teenager disappears, she does her own thing away from the team. The teenager is the granddaughter of a local villain who is well known to Heather which adds fuel to the fire.I absolutely loved this. I have read it all today. The character of Ace, a classmate of the missing teenager, is brilliant and makes the book for me. The story is riveting, gruesome, full of bad language as expected and full of humour. It also has some sad and tender moments surprisingly and we see a surprisingly more tender and gentle side of Heather. I hope this is the start of a series and look forward to reading more from Heather and hopefully Ace.

Another great read
Really enjoyed this book. I have to admit I had my reservations about Heather Hilson but she has grown on me. I was about half way In when I thought how long until the next one. Yes it is a different read to the Logan series. I have not read any of Hoon so cannot comment, but I intend to start right now. I kind of guessed who was guilty early on, but still had my doubts until the end. Not to sure about Ace though, if she features in a follow up she may grow on me. I have found with some other authors that when they introduce a series with new characters they can be a disappointment. That is not the case with this book and the reason I will start the Hoon series.A definite thumbs up from me ☺

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!
As a huge fan of JD Kirk aka Barry I was so excited when the first book featuring DI Heather Filson arrived in my Kindle. What a fabulous start to this series it is! Heather is such a powerful character, she commands attention with a no nonsense approach whether she has to hurt others feelings or not. This story was so easy to read and I spent a lazy afternoon on my holiday in Portugal lounging on a sunbed laughing out loud hoping it wouldn't end. I really hope we get more in this series, hopefully hear more from Ace. Barry you have excelled yet again and please never consider quitting writing you are a legend!! BP Sheffield x

The cream of Crime.
Another star has risen in the Kirk crime galaxy. This book features DI Heather Filson who had memorable guest appearances in several Logan adventures. Boozy, foul mouthed, a mess, she is a soul sister to Hoon and Logan. Literary Marmite, you either like her or loathe her. I loved her. Hangover Hetty, as I think of her, referring to some schoolgirls, says, "Was I ever that annoying?". Of course you were, dear. Still are. Demoted for losing her temper, based in Kilmarnock, caring for her old, sick, dementia struck father, she gets involved in the case of a missing schoolgirl. This connects to an old cold case. Spoiler, Heather has a close connection which might go to explain her car crash life. Fast paced, nail biting exciting, I want more of Heather and he teenage oppo, the wonderful Ace. ...Who reminds me of the weird little Russian girl Logan befriended. More, please. Highly recommended.

Excellent!
I don’t remember DI Filson from other books - but I like her a lot! This is an awesome (and gruesome!) debut. Like the fact she’s got problems at home and work but they’re not incapacitating her. Even the morning after episode didn’t put me off - the skateboard and games even gave me a chuckle! What more can I say - even the villain redeemed himself and Ace was just brilliant! I can remember how much my mother hated it if I befriended younger kids as a child. Goodness knows what she’d have done if I’d brought home an adult police Inspector - but I’m sure it wouldn’t have involved Hobnobs! Great stuff - and more Ace, please! She should get involved with some of the software out there - or maybe the ‘Wonderwall’ can stay (as long as she continues to shun Oasis!) Great addition to the portfolio! Thanks.

A Review In Thirds
It's always a challenge to me as a reader when an author presents a new series. I have to admit being surprised when the new main character from J D Kirk turned out to be DI Heather Filson, someone I felt I barely knew. As I read The One That Got Away I found myself awarding stars as I went. After I'd read a third of the book I felt disappointed. I like to read about police teams working together to solve crimes. But Heather Filson is definitely not a team player. So I was thinking three stars, mainly because I love the other J D Kirk books and am a loyal reader. However, after reading two thirds of the book I was feeling happier. Jack and Shona had appeared, briefly lighting up the story. And I was getting more used to Heather. Oh and Ace came along - a brilliant character. Four stars. Now I've finished the book, and what an ending it has too. I can't say more without giving too much away, but it's gripping stuff. Okay, J D Kirk - it's five stars all the way.

Excellent start.......
....to a new series, I hope!Well-crafted story that brought it all together in the end, but with a few twists and turns on the journey. Gritty. Realistic. Brings you along with a whirl of events yet with characters picked out carefully. This writer is good. I never used to even like murder stories but his work is injected with humour, appropriately foul language for the character and story, realistic and you want to read the next chapter.I certainly want to read the next one about Heather. I loved the insertion of characters from the Logan stories. I felt it was someone mentioning old friends, and interactions. Good stuff! You don't have to have read the Logan stories, btw. I bet you'll want to, though, once you read this new series!
