Walking With Garbo: Conversations and Recollections

I was hugely disappointed in this book. I expected all this new information & stories from the man who actually walked with & talked to Garbo daily - for years. Instead there is a bunch of generic information from other sources that I had read other places before. He had what were a few stories or comments peppered throughout the book, but nothing really that informational or new, or even insightful. Not worth a whole book. What was insightful could have filled a couple of pages, tops. There were a few things that she apparently said that did give a bit more insight to her personality & personal life, but I thought the writer would have some to add as well, after all these years, this was all there was?And the way it is constructed is very scattered, I do not like the way it's put together. There are stories on one page that extend to the next but you aren't sure who wrote what, or where it came from, or at least not easily. It didn't flow right for my taste. It took me a minute to realize he put up these stories from other sources, then added what is apparently, stuff Garbo said in another font in the middle of the pages, several times on some pages, none on others. And you are supposed to figure it out because the font is changed. Pictures, not that many, are nothing that new. I was hoping for something really special here. Disappointed. :(

While this book doesn't go deep enough in getting to know the real Garbo, it does come close. People don't seem to be able to distiguish between Greta Gustafsson (her real name),the person, and Greta Garbo, the actress. She has been depicted as stupid, lazy, a sexual pervert, and strange. Even in this book, some people who knew her have said that her eating habits were strange. What is so strange about liking Swedish food? Or preparing your own breakfast or lunch? What is so strange about going window shopping, going to flee markets, or taking a walk in Central Park? What is so strange about going out with friends, or going to bed early and getting up early? She was a former movie star who gave it up for a normal life-as normal as she could make it considering that she was followed by paparazzi and fans for the rest of her life. It is to her credit that she didn't allow her fame to turn her into a complete recluse. I think she was shy and thought by giving up her career, her celebrity would go away, but it never did.

Before I read this book, I really didn't know much about the personality of Greta Garbo, but through her words and the description of her by the author, she comes alive as a very warm and honest person. To her it would seem, her career as a film star was just a job. One that brought her fame that would follow her until the last days of her life when even as she was helped into her car to go to the hospital, she was hounded by photographers. And when her time on the screen was over, she would have liked to just travel and enjoy her life. She never said, "I want to be alone." What she said was, "I want to be let alone." This is a great read about one of this centuries great personalities. She was a collector and even designed her own rugs for her appartment. And if you had been lucky enough she might even have made sphegetti.

I have not yet finished the book, but it arrived in great condition and i was very pleased.The only thing I was dissapointed in was the added shipping cost. At the time that I stumbled upon this book, not only had I read a couple of biographies about Garbo, I had also found the images of the older Garbo walking the streets of New York fascinating. I decided to take a chance and add it to my collection. I am glad that I did, in fact, once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down.The very private Garbo said, "I've always wanted two lives - one for movies, one for myself." While Walking With Garbo contains quite of bit of biographical information, beautiful photographs, and interesting trivia and quotes about Garbo in relation to her film career, what I found most fascinating was the look this book gives into Garbo's private life, her life after her film career had ended, her likes and dislikes, her habits, her sense of humor, her very human longings, her observations of the anonymous others who were so busy observing her. The author extensively quotes from conversations with her, and getting to know a bit about the private Garbo was fascinating. Unlike other books I have read about her, this book does not dwell on Garbo's sexuality, which I found refreshing and which is one of the things I most appreciate about this book.I found this book to be very well written and a joy to read. It is one of my favorites, and in my opinion, it is worthy of Five Stars.

ENTIRELY DIFFERENT READING THAT WEAVES VERY NICELY INTO WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT GARBO FROM BIOGRAPHIES WE'VE READ ....WE, THE GARBO FANS.

Fascinating reading.I'm still a little apprehensive as to whether Mr Daum is genuine but the book is good value and if true adds to the fascination of a much misinterpreted woman.
