with Tex Winter, Los Angeles Lakers Assistant Coach Tex Winter has seen and done it all in the world of basketball!Winter doesn't stake claim as the Triangle Offense's "inventor," but takes tremendous pride in being the Triangle's greatest innovator. In 60 years with the offense, he has developed and modified it to fit many different coaching challenges. The Triangle is introduced by Winter's exploration of his 7 principles of a sound offense. Tex states that offensive rebounding and defensive balance is a vital part of this offense. Penetration, spacing, ball & player movement, and utilizing individual talents are other highlighted principles. The "Learning the Offense" segment is a template for teaching the offense to young or new players. Tex shares his well-earned wisdom with his 6 "Good Coaching" concepts. An organized, well-spaced fast break precedes the half court Triangle action. Proper teaching of all 5 spots is required. "The Moment of Truth" occurs when the defense exerts pressure in the backcourt as they attempt to slow down the fast break. Winter uses players to demonstrate the offense. A featured breakdown drill is the pinch drill, which incorporates shooting, pinch action and 2-man game action. Winter dedicates a section of teaching to playing against pressure. Players are instructed specific tasks as they work as a team to get the ball up the floor against pressing teams. Terminology and teaching points in include weak side guard fill, Blind Pig, Squeeze action, Change-up, fan pass, speed cut, lag pass, inside reverse pivot, front turn, baseline reverse pivot, baseline cuts, playing without the ball, 2-man game, screen and roll, dribble hand-off, 2-pass post, Dribble entry, 2 pass, 4 pass, 1st, 2nd, 3rd cutters. This DVD will allow you to learn step-by-step the elements that make up this powerful and versatile offense. The "Yoda" of Basketball - Watch, Listen and Learn. Execute you Must, Win You Shall!
This is Coach Winter's last basketball clinic recorded on DVD prior to his stroke in 2009. Recorded for future generations of basketball lifers to enjoy, old school meets new as Tex explains the unique terminology (i.e. ping passes and pinch post) and demonstrates the various elements of a successfully proven offensive system (including 10 NBA Championships) that can be played from junior high school to the pro level and for which the smart coach/player can hang his hat. The video provides an enlightened review of Coach Winter's coaching philosophy which covers the importance of executing fundamental skills in a team sport . Tex discusses in great detail 6 of the 7 principles of the Triangle Offense (aka Triple Post Offense). It is truly amazing to observe this wise and energetic Octogenarian Coach, whose integrity, honesty, and love of "The Game" spans over 7 decades, as he conducts a series of walk through practices. Tex teaches and provides on-the-spot critiquing of young athletes, emphasizing the importance of proper player spacing, movement of the ball and angles for penetrating defenses through quick and accurate passing and controlled player movement with a purpose to effectively operate and execute any position on the court... winning not by trying but doing in the process.
