As a medical student, I rotated with Dr. Chizner for two weeks and saw countless cardiology patients with a variety of diagnoses present in this book. During that time, it became clear to me that this book may very the bible of cardiology. The wisdom in this book is not merely self evident but shines brightly when one correlates the clinical pearls found within this book with our experiences with real patients.The priceless knowledge transcribed on these pages, gathered through decades of clinical practice from Dr. Chizner himself if not his forefathers in cardiology, is succinctly yet plainly relayed to the reader. This book guides us through how to properly assess a patient through a five finger approach including a history, physical exam, ecg, chest x-ray, and laboratory testing. More than that, it presents management strategies with thought towards what evidence supports these strategies, but due recognition of where evidence does not yet exist.It is my belief that every medical student, regardless of their desired specialty, should have the life-saving knowledge of basic cardiology found within this book. The stethoscope is not a prop, but a reliable and cost-effective tool for assessing our patient's cardiovascular health in the hands of a skilled clinician. I wanted to take a moment to write a review not necessarily solely for this book, but of the incredible author, Dr. Michael A. Chizner. I am a third year medical student, and I was blessed to have Dr. Chizner as my preceptor for my cardiology rotation. To say this simply, Dr. Chizner was one of the most informative and caring teachers I have ever had. He personally would sit with us students and teach us the ways of cardiology. He explained challenging concepts in a way that us medical novices could grasp. With impressive talent, he demonstrated vocally an array of sounds associated with a variety of valvular and muscular heart conditions. It was from this book, Clinical Cardiology made ridiculously simple, that Dr. Chizner would read and further explain many common and uncommon cardiology facts and findings. I had previously struggled with a multitude of topics within the cardiovascular realm, but even within my initial week with Dr. Chizner, many of the elements that were lost to me became quite clear. Dr. Chizner’s teachings further extended into the exam room, where his bedside manners and empathy for patients was unmatched. Expertly, he could diagnose a range of cardiac conditions with stethoscope and mind alone. Despite his brilliance, he never flaunted his abilities. He only sought to share what he kept dear in his heart, mind, and soul: the scientific and artistic teachings of Dr. W Proctor Harvey, his former teacher. Words alone cannot describe how grateful I am to have had this experience with Dr. Chizner. Now at the tail end of my medical education, I regret not having encountered this resource earlier. This is the single most comprehensive text on Cardiology I've used in my entire medical education. I, like many others, was having difficulty really grasping cardiology concepts and how they relate to management of cardiac issues. Having to use multiple resources with often convoluted explanations made this all the more difficult. Reaching for this single text, I am able to reference any concept and its implications for making decisions in patient management; whether on a board exam question or a real life patient. The content is up to date with the most recent peer reviewed studies and national guidelines in the field of Cardiology. I can confidently say this resource has single handedly improved my understanding and translated into improved board exam scores. I will continue to use it moving forward in my career and wholeheartedly recommend this text to students and post graduates alike.
