An essential piece of kit for diagnosing any modern car
This is the ideal simple to use diagnostic scanner. The scanner itself is very easy to use, once you find the port in your car the scanner is very easy to connect. This kind of gives various different readouts, and let you test everything from battery condition to diagnosing faults with the engine and ECU. I found this very easy to use, very easy to read and the information that it gave provided me with options are what I needed to do. There is the option to reset error codes, I would make sure that you know what the underlying problem is before doing this. This is the ideal for the kit it helps save you some money, when carrying out repairs on a modern car. Everything is electronic without the ability to read the problem, you are left paying garage prices for somebody just slowly what is wrong let alone for them to fix it. The scanner itself is very well made, feels nice in the hand, with easy to read display and sensible buttons. Overall I found this product to be very good, and a lot easier to read than using a scanner that connects to your phone.

Essential tool for modern day cars
This item was supplied to me free of charge through Amazon’s Vine programme, however this in no way influences my review, which is intended to be both impartial and informative for potential purchasers. The days of home mechanics being able to lift the bonnet and work out what's wrong with their car are long gone, but there are still things you can do to help diagnose problems and keep repair shop bills as low as possible. Most modern cars have a diagnostic port located in the driver's footwell, and that's where this handy little gadget comes in. Simply plug the diagnostic tool in with the ignition switched to power the cars electrics and you will be able to run analysis on your car's computer as well as pulling up any diagnostic fault codes that exist - this is exactly the same thing that your local garage or breakdown mechanic will do before commencing any work on the car, as the onboard computer will have stored any faults and will present them in a simple code. Once you've retrieved the code, look it up in an online database and it will tell you what is wrong with your car. You might not be able to fix it yourself, but at least you can be more informed when talking to your local garage and you can avoid them charging for work that isn't required. It's also handy if you break down at the side of the road as you might be able to determine whether the roadside assistance is likely to get you going again or whether you're looking at a recovery vehicle. In addition to the diagnostic tool, which is readily available from many suppliers, this particular gadget also incorporates a battery tester, which will allow you to analyse the health of your car battery - again, with modern car electronics this is essential as your battery is placed under a lot of strain, and an ailing battery can actually throw up apparently expensive faults on your car's computer which would actually be fixed just by replacing the battery. A must have for anyone who has at least a basic understanding of how their car works.

Saves ££££ at the garage in diag fees
Anyone with a modern car should have a diagnostic tool to save them money at the garage with basic diagnostics and where necessary resetting the fault codes. For me it has saved me money as my Hyundai i30 has an issue with one of the sensors flagging an emissions error falsely when driven with fuel saving in mind, despite the sensor being replaced. This reader is able to reset to code when it flags, saving me money for the garage to do it. Using the reader is reasonably simple - just plug it into the OBDII socket. It is powered from the socket and works with most cars. I did notice it can take a couple of goes to recognise the car correctly, occasionally telling me that no compatible ECU was present. Just redetecting resulted in the ECU being picked up correctly. It quickly gives the fault (DTC) codes and has a lookup to give a clue as to the reason for it being there. The lookups are for generic codes and not model specific and it is not always possible to pick up custom ECUs in the car (airbag etc for instance). For this you do need a model specific reader. Along with the basics for fault codes, the tool can give details of the battery and how it performs during engine starting. This is useful if you suspect a battery or electric fault somewhere, but it a more advanced diagnostic than just reading a fault code. For this reason, I would suggest leaving these tests unless you know what you are doing. The screen on the tool is easy to reader although the navigation/control buttons are a bit plasticky and do not feel that strong. They did however work flawlessly for me. This is a budget tool so the build quality with buttons etc is as I expected.

Why is your check engine light on? Find out for yourself. Then you can clear it, which the parts stores won't do. Check if the status is ready for inspection before you go. Fast and bright, easy to read. It's a nice low-end scanner.
