it took me a few days to really love this pen
I admit, it took me a few days to really love this pen. Initially, I was actually a little disappointed. The pen has written perfectly from the beginning, and the wood is gorgeous, BUT the plastic grip section of the pen feels very cheap in comparison; especially compared to the less expensive Sailor 1911 Standards and such. The plastic has obvious manufacturing seams, from the injection molding process, and I think that for a pen at this price point, those should NOT be visible. They can even be felt, if you run your hands along them at the right place. However, once I got past the section, and began to evaluate the pen as a whole, I enjoyed it immensely. The pen has fantastic balance, posts well, and the wood is amazing. I would guess it is Bombay Blackwood, also known as Indian Rosewood. I am no expert on wood though. All I know is that the grain on the pen is gorgeous; it's hard to do a wooden pen well, but Sailor managed. The nib wrote very smoothly, with a touch of feedback (like most Sailor nibs, this writes how velvet feels). Evaluated as a package, it feels well crafted and like a high quality product. The name "Sailor Precious Wood" does not seem like hyperbole when I'm writing with this pen. It would have gotten a five out of five if the section plastic were better. There appears to be some sort of coating/lacquer/something on the pen that serves as protection from the elements, moisture, and apparently posting.I would recommend the pen at this price, and also at it's full price, but ONLY if you like wood. High quality wooden fountain pens aren't as common as one might think, and this is a well executed example. I will probably sand down the seams of the injection molded section to enjoy the pen more, but even if I did not, the pen is just wonderful enough that I would still recommend it despite that flaw.
