Looks and feels like a £500-600 sub. Sounds like a £350-400 sub. I guess as it costs that it's a good thing.
I bought this to go with my existing Behringer B210D active speakers, which were fine for music quizzes, occasional karaoke evenings and very occasional small discos in small halls. For the first two tasks the Behringers are fine but for the latter, they lack the ability to throw the bass very far.The choice of sub was difficult and because I very rarely DJ these days, I wasn't planning to spend serious money on one. That is also evidenced by the choice of the speakers I already owned, the aforementioned Behringers. In my price range were the cheaper options from brands like QTX and in this price range Alto and Behringer. I pretty much ruled out the cheaper options without any thought at all.Having done lots of overtime (which funded this purchase) but having therefore been busy to go to a shop to listen to any units, I resorted to written reviews and Youtube videos. Despite liking my Behringers, (they've served me really well and continue to do so), I decided the Alto was the better choice and opted for a 15 model".My set up is a stereo mixer with left and right jack speaker outputs, into the XLR inputs on this sub and then the left and right Behringer speakers out from the back of the sub (XLR to XLR), so one sub acting as pass-through to two satellites running in stereo. On the back of the sub you have options to allow the satellites to operate as full range speakers or for the sub to do all the bass and the satellites to only do high and mid range. With my set up I could tell my Behringers could project further when they didn't have to do the bass as well, but I liked the sound better when they did. There's an extended frequency option on the back of the sub which allows a little bit more low end.The sub has a strange system for the LED that tells you how far you can go before you start clipping. You get a red flashing light at the point it is clipping but before that you have solid green and flashing green on the LED. It's obvious the sub is on and working so why not just have a single light flash when it clips rather than different colours at different levels? In terms of sheer grunt I think the Alto provides a good amount for the money. It feels very well made, but from looking at it, considering its rated output and considering the feel of the quality, it doesn't deliver quite as much bass boost as I would have thought. This is somewhat summed up by me still using my satellites in full range mode, not mid and high end only.I suppose I would summarise that point by saying, if you read the specs and felt the quality of it, you'd think it was a £500-600 sub. Once you heard it you would think it was a £350-£400 sub that's just well made. Going back to the quality element even the dials and buttons have a real solid feel to them. For the money this is very simple to use, very sturdy and attractive to look at. Compared with some other brands it's not that heavy either. However it is a case of you get what you pay for. Another £200 would have given me more bass and the ability to push that bass further into the hall.If I were starting from scratch I'd probably have got a pair of 15" full range speakers and wouldn't need to go with a separate subwoofer having spend more on just the two main speakers. As I already had a pair of 10" speakers and needed to have a better bass, particularly one you can feel, then the Alto TS215S was a good choose for this price range. If you need to fill larger halls on a regular basis I think this is rugged enough to last lots of transporting and use, but you might wish you'd spent a little bit more money when it comes to output. Possibly this sub would suit a pair of 12" satellites that are still operating in full range far better than my 10" speakers can.
