Young Muriel (Toni Collette) feels unloved and unappreciated in her suburban home, and sets out for Sydney, where she hopes to fulfill her dream of a traditional white wedding. Armed only with her Abba dance routines and an eagerness to please, she stumbles into an arranged marriage with a hunky South African swimmer. However, her dreams of marriage are soon tested by her best friend Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths) falling seriously ill.

Love this film
Not watching for years. Even better than I recall. Dark in places and funny in others.

Fun lighthearted film about a sociopath.
This is a coming of age story but the main character barely grows and is at her core a genuinely awful person who seems wholly incapable of caring for another human being. She is selfish to her very core and the film tries to be like oh she's this poor girl who doesn't fit in but she learns to care about more.... she kind of does but it doesn't feel like a fundamental change in her. In the meantime (and spoilers here) she cries about not having a husband while her friend sits there in a wheelchair. Shallowly ditches her despite her being the only genuine person in her life. Sidelines her own mother at her wedding. Doesn't seem all that bothered beyond the impact on her that her mother was trapped in abusive relationship and killed herself. Doesn't care that her siblings are left with that bastard. In the end she redeems herself 1% though truly everything suggests she is just going to let her disabled friend down in the end because, well she's garbage. If this film was made today though I think Muriel would get a proper wedding cause though it would suggest terrible taste on her part (like being friends with her isn't terrible enough judgement) but Muriel and her mate clearly wanna bang I mean come on when they're on the beach singing Abba and at the end??? Just kiss already. I'd prefer the film if it went that way.

Muriels wedding
Muriels wedding is very funny and very emotional and the ABBA music makes it more enjoyable it's a fantastic film worth the watch if you have not seen it it's a film not to be missed

An absolute delight
An absolute delight of a film. Brought up with a family who belittles her and friends who don’t like her, Muriel has only ever wanted to get married. If she can find someone to marry her, that’ll mean she’s changed, that she’s not overweight or as useless as she’s been made to feel her whole life. After a little bit of banking fraud and misappropriation of funds, she changes her name and starts believing in herself, thanks, in large part, to her friend, the similarly outcast, Rhonda.Muriel's optimism and enthusiasm are infectious. The fact that she lies as easily as breathing in and out is almost irrelevant because she’s a delight and how could you not want her to be happy?A beautiful performance from Toni Collette, ably supported by a wonderful cast. There’s a reason Muriel’s Wedding is a classic.
