The Oxford Bible Commentary

This commentary is the best I have come across of the one-volume commentaries. It's layout and its approach to each book of the Bible is so very clear and its review of previous commentators is comprehensive, I recently came across it in the library of Tymawr Convent (in Wales) and decided there and then that I must have my own copy. I find it invaluable as background reading for the preparation of sermons and for Bible study. It is what I would call "healthily scheptical" in its approach or, if you prefer, "wide ranging", which is, of course, what you would expect from such editors as John Barton and John Muddiman.

Had been looking to buy my own copy of this commentary after having my vicar’s own copy on long term loan. Really pleased to find this on the Student Prime book section at an affordable price.One of the best commentaries available.

I never formally studied biblical literature or theology, so I do need to look things up from time to time to understand the context of what I'm reading. I purchased several commentaries, but found this absolutely the best one and it has become the one I always go to. A nice, neat, compact book, a decent size, easy to navigate.

This book is an excellent commentary and companion to the bible.It is cut from a very broad cloth, and is more open ended than one might haveexpected. It admits some areas of uncertainty and accepts some alternative views.It is of extreme value in offering interpretation in areas where the meaning is uncertainor in explaining confusing language.It is strongly recommended to anyone wishing to study the Bible for whatever reason

This is an excellent basic commentary covering the Old Testament, New Testaments and all of the Deuterocanonical books included in the complete NRSV. It also has sections on post biblical Jewish literature and early Christian writings such as the Didache. Altogether a very worthwhile purchase, and a considerable help in sermon preparation. One word of warning, weighing in at over 5lb 5oz, it is rather heavy to carry around!

The coverage of this single volume work is such that I was able to give away several of my old (1950s and 1960s) commentaries. I think that says it really. Of course, scholarship moves on apace and this book is no longer new. I wait to see if updates or revisions are planned.

Good concise scholarly commentary, but the paperback binding is far too flimsy for the size and weight of the book, and I have reinforced it with polythene. The hardback would have been better for regular use.

The book is immaculate and in very good condition. It is even more well presented than the paperback version.

The book is decorous，I'm looking forward to reading it， and the logistics are also fast. It's worth it!

The content of this book is very solid and well informed, especially when compared to many study bibles, which in some cases offer a clearly tendentious interpretation of the Bible, and in other cases, possibly out of fear of losing market share, tend to cling to old-fashioned ideas since long abandoned in scientific discourse, which the average believer hears in church, and expects to see confirmed in his study bible.Far from ideal, however, is this commentary as a physical book. It is well printed, in a rather small but clear and easily readable letter, but it has two major drawbacks:- it has a very stiff glued back, as a consequence of which it never lies completely open. This makes the reading of the right column on left pages and of the left column on right pages rather unpleasant.- it is very heavy (ca 2400 gr, much heavier than many study bibles), and therefore not easy to handle.A well-bound and lighter new edition of this very valuable commentary, with a reasonable price, is an important desideratum.

A well written and in-depth explanation of the Bible on a book by book basis. I first utilized this commentary as a library loan. I kept coming back to it so I have finally added it to my own personal library. So glad that I did, you will be as well! Highly recommended for casual personal study. 5 stars out of 5
