can strings be replaced when they break by standard strings?

I know this question was already answered, but I would just like to reinforce: the strings on this instrument are Aquila Nylguts. These strings are very much the standard for ukulele. Far too many reviewers have referred to these as "toy" strings. I can only assume that this is due to them only being familiar with traditional guitars, and not the larger body of stringed instruments available. Although it's an innocent mistake, it's a misunderstanding that is very likely to discourage someone from purchasing what is actually a very good instrument for it's price range. It's especially damaging when they present the information in a way that implies that they know what they are talking about, when they clearly do not. In comparison to guitars, ukulele are relatively delicate instruments. More importantly, they do not have a truss rod in the neck. While some tenor ukulele can hold up to steel strings, a little soprano like this would almost certainly warp, or even flat out fail, under that kind of pressure. I won't say it's impossible, but I definitely wouldn't risk mine trying to make it work. Either way, ukulele are not designed to use metal strings. Most ukulele strings are made from some variation of nylon, just like a classical guitar. You may have heard them referred to as "gut," or "catgut" strings, because they were originally made out of animal intestine. Nylon is now preferred for obvious reasons. If you were to go out and buy a $1500 ukulele, there is a very high chance that it would be strung with either these exact same strings, or Aquila SuperNylgut strings. It's just a matter preference. These are very much real, professional grade strings. One thing that I really like about Aquila is that even though they are the industry standard when it comes to ukulele strings, they are actually a surprisingly small, family run company. That may not matter to anyone else, but it makes me just a little bit happier to support them. Fun fact: All that being said, you actually can get strings that are made of flourocarbon (which is exactly the same material that fishing line is made from). Very few people use them, though. I've only ever heard people complain about the way they feel, and I believe that stretching is a much bigger problem with them. I've never tried them personally, however.

Is the ukulele that comes with the starter kit the ka-15s because it says ltp-s on the inside of the instrument?

It is a different ukulele from the KA-15S. I'm not sure exactly how different but if you go to the Kala website and look at the specs for each the specs are slightly different. So it's definitely not a KA-15S with a different label slapped on it or anything.

many reviews mention instrument not holding tune. is this due to poor tuners, or just string stretch that occurs on any instrument?

This is the case on all ukuleles and classical guitars. It has nothing to do with the tuners. It is because of the nylon plastic string and the tie they do at the bridge. If you sign up for "Learn to Play" on Kala's website they show you how to tune and stretch your strings.

The tote bag it looks like sack. Does it protect the Ulk? any padding?

It is very much a sack. It is not padded. More of a back sling for carrying.

For the price it's amazing

This is a proper instrument to learn on. Great for beginners. Ukeleles that are cheap using suffer from tuning issues and poor intonation but this uke is great. Sounds great out the box and you can't really go wrong with a Kala. The finish is the only thing I could criticise but for the price it's great.

Lovely Mellow sound

High quality well worth the investment as it is easier to play than my cheap Ukulele as this one has the strings closer to the fret-board so are easily pressed. Excellent delivery, arrived faster than expected from USA to England. Thank you

Good ukulele

I like the ukulele - sound is really good, chose tenor as research I did on sound was in line with my liking. I am pleased with sound. Learning to play which is enjoyable. Dislike Kala app as they charge you after while

Good beginners instrument.

As a beginners' instrument it fits the bill. Pay attention to the advice regarding re tuning the strings as it's new, they need time to settle in, and you shouldn't be disappointed.

Misleading- online lessons require subscription at 34 gbp per year

Decent ukulele for beginners but the online lessons require subscription at 34 gbp per year which is not clear from the description. The free app is limited to 29 seconds per song. Misleading to call it a starter kit as the free app is available to anyone on App Store. There are better options.

Well crafted ukelele! However, the kit does not come with anything special... The beginner's book is just a useless booklet that you can get it anywhere from the Internet. You have to pay to use its ukelele app... Didn't see why this is called a beginner's kit...

C'est mon premier ukulele, j'en joue depuis ce matin. Acheté suite aux conseils vus sur plusieurs sites qui le recommandaient. Je joue de la guitare, et tout de suite on voit que l'on a un instrument dans les mains, pas un jouet à bas prix. Les finitions sont excellentes sur un tel budget. Les cordes fournies sont de très bonnes cordes d'après ce que j'ai pu lire (je n'ai pas de comparaison). Les mécaniques sont simples, les cordes demandent plusieurs réglages les premiers temps le temps de se mettre en place (au début toute les 5 min puis sur une journée commencent à se stabiliser), elles ne sont pas trop éloignées du manches. Au niveau couleur, les photos ne sont pas forcément représentatives, c'est une couleur bois un peu foncé (pas orange/miel) (pas aussi foncé que les meubles anciens), la finition est matte ce qui me plait beaucoup. Les touches du manche sont en bois plus clair que le reste. Les découpes des frettes sont impec. franchement agréablement surpris, à voir dans le temps ! la housse est peu épaisse mais elle protège quand même un peu, suffisant pour moi, mais une vraie housse matelassée pourrait être préférable pour ceux qui veulent faire du chemin avec sans risquer de lui mettre un choc.
