Pretty Good
Uzumaki without a doubt has got to be my favorite Junji Ito story thus far. The absolute horror masterpiece hooked me on reading Junji Ito’s work in the first place, ever since I saw that iconic image. Spirals from the start always fascinated me. It’s one of the only shapes that seem to go on and on and never stop, and it’s honestly a beautiful one aswell. That’s most likely why I was so hooked to this story, from the art alone. How the spiral affected everything down to the blades of grass made it especially eerie. What I especially liked about Uzumaki and it’s psychological aspects is how the spiral affected everything and everyone in general. It can cause you to go mentally insane over it or it could even affect your physical appearance. How the spiral worked was mysterious and even by the end of the story you still don’t know. Speaking of the ending, I thought it couldn’t have a better one. The more and more this town was affected, the more and more things start to go wrong, leading to the ending where it becomes a spiral itself. The very end of the story was very bitter sweet, with Kirie’s family gone, and Shuichi who has given up on everything, they call back to “Twisted Souls” and become one. Uzumaki definitely is one of the most emotionally psychological Junji Ito stories that (just like a spiral) will never seem to end…This is the end of my review for Uzumaki. A incredible introduction to the Junji Ito universe if you’re thinking about reading his works! As per usual, I’ll give my three favorite chapters for Uzumaki.3.) The Black Lighthouse. The eeriness of this chapter is fantastic, and I like how the lighthouse is always there in the background throughout every chapter before it.2.) Medusa. The visuals in this chapter alone are just stunning. It also is a perfect example on what the spiral can do with your sanity and how it makes you obsessed.1.) Scar. Again another obvious favorite but it’s an iconic one. It’s a perfect representation of the unexplained. This chapter could also be a bit of a call back to Tomie, where the boys become infatuated with Azamis beauty, obviously resulting in a fate worse than death.
