Bad Boy
Juliet Doyle - a former neighbour of DCI Alan Banks when he was still married - turns up one day asking to see him. Banks is on an extended holiday in the US and she sees DI Annie Cabbot instead. Juliet has found a gun in her daughter Erin's bedroom and wants to know what she should do about it. Annie follows correct procedure and sends in the armed response team to deal with it. Unfortunately following correct procedure leads to tragedy and a complex chain of events which involves not just Banks and Annie but his daughter Tracy as well.I enjoyed this very tense and eventful story with its many twists and turns. It is good to see Superintendent Catherine Gervaise in a more positive light and she really is growing on me. The book demonstrates very well that we never know what exactly will result directly from simple everyday actions and impulses.I have been reading this series back to back - which really is a test of well written series. So far - almost at the end of the current published volumes I have not got bored with them at all and I shall be sorry when I am up to date.

Fantastic read
I love the DCI Banks series and hope that Peter Robinson writes many more, it's easy to identify with Inspector banks as you grow with him across 24 years of police service. I have read them all (24 books to date) and will be reading them all again.

You won’t want to put this one down!
Just finished this book a few minutes ago. It was a really good read. Good strong characters, good strong story line with enough twists to keep you hooked. I literally could not put it down. DCI Banks is so human ....... except for his ridiculous music tastes. Anyway, I loved it and would recommend it, although it is more satisfying if you’ve read the preceding books.

Loved It!
After my disappointment of the previous book, I feel this is one of the best in the series so far. DI Banks is back from his holiday in America to recover from his previous ordeal only to find his daughter is in danger and is on the run with a man suspected of shooting Annie Cabot, Alan Banks colleague and friend. Would have given more stars if I could.

good crime novel as usual
All the DCI Banks books are an enthralling read spoilt somewhat by the author's indulgence. Namely his love of music which I could well do without. Descriptions of music on virtually every page is a tad too much. Pity really as the books are very absorbing.

Only half a DCI Banks book
Bit of a misnomer making this a "DCI Banks" book, given that he doesnt actually appear until page 204.I've now read approximately 2/3rds of the Banks books and, sadly, this is a real disappointment.

Having read all of Peter Robinson's books over the years I must admit this is not as good as his others, but having said that I still did enjoy reading it. His books are always interesting and are a good read. The reason for only 4 stars is because of his daughter Tracy. At the beginning I found her extremely irritating and felt like giving her a good shake for being so stupid, but then again it is her actions that make the story. A lot of reviewers have commented on the amount of music described in the authors stories and sometimes I do find it a bit much, but then again there are several other authors that do the same thing with their characters so he is not alone.

Allways a pleasure never a chore
is what I'd like to have said, but sadly, like the last Banks outing I carried on reading this to the end more from loyalty than enjoyment. For comparison I re-read one of Dorothy L Sayers Wimsey novels the next day to see how it should be done. One especial criticism of the Banks series is that the writer now lives in Canada and it shows. For example he makes a desparaging remark about the poor wine in pubs which would have been very true twenty years ago but not now. The constant obsessive naming of pieces of music is now wearing. In this book some of the decisions and motivations of characters do not ring true. All said and done though there are more worse than better books out there.

Gritty
A different DCI Banks story involving very personal issues for the detective. Difficult and emotional scenarios as usual but under very different circumstances. Very enjoyable as usual.

Bad Boy
Peter Robinson can't write a bad novel! Very well crafted as is the whole series - the character of Alan Banks comes to life, as to all the subsidiary personalities
