Neumann Low Frequency Audio Perfection - KH 750 DSP
When I purchased a pair of Neumann KH 120 near-field monitors, I had zero expectation of adding a sub to extend the KH 120 range. But then, if I *were* to extend the range, Neumann had a lock on it.The KH 120's are arguably the best monitors in thier size class. The sonic purety, accuracy, and separation, if you have never experienced it, borders on cognitive disturbance - prior to assimilating a listening and mixing experience that is superlatively emotive and simply beautiful. I drive the KH 120's directly with a Schiit Audio Gungnir DAC, fully balanced. I have to plug the Gungnir. The specs all appear to have a misplaced decimal point in the THD and IMD numbers - but they are not, and they are < 0.002% at both frequency (20 Hz to 20 kHz) and intermodulation CCIR. The balanced output is the sweetest I have heard.I thought I knew about low frequency, and was dreaming about having the LF punch I have heard in lesser systems. With the frequency range of the Gungnir and the distortion numbers, I became obsessed to hear my system, just once, with a sub equivalent in performance to my monitors. It just so happens that the KH 750 is virtually matched OOTB with the KH 120's. I really had to ask myself how serious am I about this quest? The path was illuminated and the inertia had been building for several weeks.Speaking personally, I could not see cheating myself out of the opportunity to hear my system only once with the KH 750, and to allow equivalent opportunity to fully delude myself into thinking that "only once" was the destination of all my energy. The sub is not inexpensive, and I am humbled that I am able to own one. I would never go into debt for it, but all these events and good fortune led me to write this review today. There are simply too many variables in systems and rooms to say anything concrete about how the LF adds joy, and how much joy it adds. I thought I knew about LF sonics, walls, absorption and dispursion. Turns out that the sub is an entity that exists within the confines of exactly where it is placed in a room, with the ability to manipulate crossover freqs and gain - both in and out. The sub bathes in reflection and shakes things up, literally. You don't just buy a sub like this. You must learn about first-principles of LF and integrating that LF into an existing system that LF had no provision. The sound appears in a space-time where you would never expect it. It does not behave like a mid-rage and it is simply a sonic addition that needs to be met where it is. Make no assumptions about it.The KH 750 was found to be worth the money spent to acquire it. It is a gift to your ears, and pulls one deeper into the sounds and emotions that make the world a more bearable place. In closing, the sub has added to the quality of my listening experience in a positive way. You cannot place a numerical value on such a subjective entity where the euphoric component is transient and means different things to different people. If you love sound, buy it. You will not be disappointed.
