Very decent value for ~$10
As the title suggests, given the cost and the content, I'm really happy with this book. For someone who has never worked with Java (and/or object-oriented programming), this seems like a smart way to get a basic foundation started. Some of the early chapters are quite simple, but that's surely by design, to help avoid gaps in knowledge. The middle chapters focus on variables / data types, flow control, classes, et al. There's a chapter toward the end on deploying applications that I found very useful. In short: it's for Java beginners; it serves that audience well; at US$10, it's easily worth it to me.

" In Easy Steps" series is useless
i wanted a beginners guide for java programming through a JRE program like Eclipse or JCreator or IDEA but this one works with the notepad and the command prompt on windows and similar on MAC OS AND LINUX, it works, but not very creative, really basic and i wanted to see some GUI programming and making runnable programs in a window but there is only a little details about this. wouldn't recommend it for students! or even beginners because its boring to use and very simple even for starters. hard to get the stuff to work, needs almost a geek to figure it out!but on the other hand if you want to learn JAVA programming it has about everything to start your bases in Java programming, i like how the book is very readable, and colored! would have been better with a practice Labs Section!Update. This is the worst Java programming book you can find. i honestly understood more Java of knowing VB a year earlier. this is useless along with all this series of programming guides. bought 3 of them and they're all useless.

Four Stars
Good as are refresher. I still have my other text books I use.

Lacks Comprehensive Details
The each chapter could have offered more comprehensive details to enhance a learner's understanding of Java. But the book is still useful to newbies.

Good if you know absolutely nothing
Bunch of great examples, as a visual learner there isn't more I could ask for.

Some of the best books I have ever read
With this book it becomes very easy learning the Java language. The walkthrough provides insight into small pieces . I could understand concepts that previously had failed .

Terrific reference
I really like this reference book. Succinct, correct, and easy to understand. Very helpful. I will use this with my college Java class, as I am the professor.

Simply the best book for the beginner - it will get you started.
I think previous reviewers who have dissed this book for being too simplistic are missing the point - IT IS A BOOK FOR BEGINNERS - and it serves that readership very well. Clearly a lot of thought was given to who the book is for - this is a very welcome change in a computer book!So many instruction books in computing seem to be written with no clearly defined readership (and the level of knowledge and experience they may already have) in mind.It seems that the 'Easy Steps' series of books set a high professional level of writing and publishing skills - they target a defined readership in an intelligent way and they keep that readership in mind - they don't let their author's run off at the mouth and lose contact with the reader. This book does what it intends to do - get you started in Java programming - and it lays a good basis for you to then move on to higher levels. It is clearly written, intelligently structured, and well illustrated. If you are reasonably computer savvy, but not an experienced programmer, and you want to start programming with Java - buy this book.

A reasonable reference
I brought this book believing it to be a tutorial, it is not. What it is is a reasonable reference, if a little dated. I have other books on my kindle that will provide a better reference, but I can still see myself turning to it for basic reference. Given the price I would say it is a fair book for the money.

Brilliant little book
I purchased Head First Java and Java in Easy Steps at the same time to prepare for a college course I'm undertaking in August. The reviews were excellent for both books, but for me, Mike McGrath's book trounces the Head First Java - and at a third of the price. The book is in full colour and tastefully laid out with help on installing the Java Development Kit properly and making sure the correct paths are set up. The information is presented in a clear, straightforward manner and everything is explained well enough that I don't think an additional outside source is needed - unlike the Head First Java book which is a complete, unfunny mess.I can recommend Java in easy steps 100% and after just a week can program small but useful programs and have assured myself I will be able to conquer my I.T. course in a few months.

Great book - buy it and you won't be sorry
This is one of the best computer books I have ever read (and I own a few believe me!). It is well written, so simple to follow for the novice without being patronising and demystifies Java from the start. It is comprehensive and logically laid out.Whizzed through this in a few hours (albeit previous programming knowledge helped) but I feel anyone interested in Java would benefit from this.Top book.

MUST BUY!
Great book which helped me pass my exam for my module. Easy to read. Split into categories, going through each function in good detail. A MUST BUY for anyone studying IT/Computing courses or just want to learn the language for programming.
