Traditional design and perfect functionality
This is a wonderful piece of kit; as solid and well balanced as it looks, with enough weight to be stable when in use. The 'granular' texture of the ceramic surface of the mortar and of the working end of the pestle ensure a good grip on the material being ground, resisting the tendency for seeds and the like to slip out from between the grinding surfaces as they do with smooth and polished surfaces, like granite or marble. The ceramic 'working' end of the pestle blends smoothly into the wooden handle which is pleasant to hold, and the knob on the end is big enough to allow the application of considerable pressure without discomfort. It's exactly the right size for my needs in a small domestic kitchen, small enough to keep seeds together in the bottom, but with enough volume to cope with the occasional need to grind larger stuff, vegetables or fish for example. It's easy to wash by hand, and it always looks good on the shelf, a classic example of a traditional, evolved design performing brilliantly and looking wonderful. As you can probably tell, I like it!

A Classic, Highly Recommended
A classic (indeed, ancient) device. My mum's Milton Brook mortar (the 'bowl') and pestle, which i inherited, lasted over 40 years. Only my clumsiness ended it's illustrious career. That is, i dropped it on a hard floor and it broke (only into two pieces i might add). Very glad they are still being manufactured. I have a cast iron pestle and mortar, but it rusts VERY easily, and oiling it defeats its intended use. This mortar and pestle will, barring accidents, last over a lifetime... Highly recommended.

For grinding only not pounding
A replacement to previous one I broke while trying to smash hard spices such as cloves. it's a beautiful object but i need to remember to grind only.

A. Very good porcelain p and m
I chose this after reading reviews of every type, mainly for the look of it and ease of cleaning, which is important when grinding spices or using garlic.

Pretty good
Porcelain mortars are always best - clean easily and aren't tainted by the ingredients. This is a good size and reasonable value.
