Great quality
It has a strong shaft and a nice bill-hook blade that looks like it can be replaced if needed. As you would expect, it's quite blade heavy and takes a certain amount of strength and stamina to use it for any length of time but should deal with brambles and other undergrowth easily.

Poor quality
The shaft has no shape to add strength where it is needed and aid grip other than a tiny tiny swell at the end. The big problem is the socket that the shaft slots into. It’s completely uneven and wraps unequally around the woodwork leaving it weaker on one side than the other. It’s no wonder that others have had problems with them snapping. This must be a second, it will be going back to be swapped and if the next one is crap, I’ll be asking for a refund. Why these can’t be made to the same quality as older ones is beyond me. Old ones are much lighter so quicker to swing, this is more like a cleaver. If the next one is no good then I’ll get an old Elswell or the like from the well known auction site.

Need to do better
Considering the price i was very dissapointed upon opening this. The blade is not sharp and is burred all the way along it.Need to do better spear and jackson. This is also VERY heavy. Im presuming low grade steel and under par manufacturing keep the costs down. This is heavier than a viking battle axe. You will not swing this for more than a few minites at a time.

After having the last Slasher stolen, I looked many places for one and the Spear & Jackson was the best brand I could see many others were cheaper but not as good quality, I finally bought this one as any other sellers who had it were higher in price, as in other reviews it was quite blunt but didn't matter, I sharpened it in a few minutes with my angle grinder, if you use the tool much you'll always need to sharpen it now and again anyhow so why moan about that.

POOR QUALITY WOOD USED
Sharpened after delivery, okay. One use and shaft snapped off where it enters the neck of the blade. Can't be bothered to send it back so I'll just buy another quality shaft from farmer's supplies in our village. DO NOT BUY THIS TOOL ON AMAZON.

effective but roughly finished
This is a rugged tool but arrived with a very unevenly sharpened blade. Had to take an angle grinder to the blade and completely resharpen. Not the standard of finish I would expect from a Spear & Jackson product.

Spear & Jackson Agricultural Irish Slasher
Excellent. Much better than the Bulldog equivalent at half the price. Does the business. Very well done. Keep it up!
