Soft closing even in high winds
I have a very heavy 6 foot gate (made from decking planks) with box steel posts. It is a great gate, but it is like a giant sail in a wind tunnel. When the wind catches it it slams so hard that the steel bolt bends and it was in fear of blowing the brick work out where the receiver post was bolted in. After speaking to a few reviewers I decided to go with this and I am so glad I did. It has been on the gate for 7 months and is still working well. It was easy enough to fit, but I did have to put some packing on the gate as the arm needs to fit on a runner that must be level with the fixing plate on the post. Once done the gate opens easily and can be adjusted to reach a point where it holds open. The gate is simply pushed and it will start to self close at a good speed, but slows down on the last few inches to give a softer close (speed also easily adjustable, but a little fiddly to get right). For me, I no longer have a gate that slams shut and even in a wind that was strong enough to push the gate closed when it was holding open, it didn't slam. It closed very quickly, but the brakes came on and it closed softly. I am really pleased with this. There is only one minor point in that the gate doesn't have the same full opening range it had previously. It won't extend beyond 90 degrees, but I can live with that.

it's a good product and works well
I've just fitted this; it's a good product and works well. It would have got 5 stars if the following had been addressed before I got it:1) Instruction leaflet could be clearer. In particular, if you want the gate to open by 90 degrees (as most people would do), the mounting bracket needs to be inset to the post - more than is implied in the instruction leaflet.2) The mounting screws supplied are hopelessly short. Mine just came out as soon as the gate was opened. I replaced them with 2 1/2 inch galvanised screws which worked much better.3) I was hoping to be able to use an electric screwdriver for this job but the mounting plate is too small to allow the body of the screwdriver (I use a Ryobi) to work the screw at a 90 degree angle to the wood.Sorry if the above seems picky - but when you're spending upwards of £50 on such a product I think it's reasonable to expect excellence.

Fantastic.
Brilliant product. Can't fault it at all. Does exactly what I wanted. I'm using it on a small garden gate and I didn't want a latch in case the postman gets frustrated. It keeps a constant 'closed' force on it when shut so I doubt if even a strong wind would push it open, but if it does it would be dampened on the way back so I'm confident it won't ever make a noise in the wind. If you had a latch on your gate that needs a bit of momentum to engage you can set it so it gives it quite a shove at the end if needed.Edit: After about 5 openings the supplied screws ripped out of the wood. Replaced with some proper 6x50 wood screws - don't imagine they'll come out. Worse case scenario I will use full bolts right the way through the wood. It does put some pretty strong forces into the fixings though.

slow closing door gate bracket( not working)
Was looking forward to fitting this today and upon fitting it the item has failed, the hydraulic mechanism within the bracket has seized and therefore not able to function. Also causing the screws provided to rip out of the gate post.Purchased it in April, however due to ill health, just got around to getting someone to call today.

Good bit of kit
As other reviewers have said the base plate should be mounted with more substantial screws - those supplied with the kit are only suitable for the flimsiest of gates. Fixing was no trouble - just a bit of fettling to adjust the closure and final closure speeds to get the desired effect.Have mounted this of a gate which probably exceeds the 50kg limit but it does the job and stops the gate banging which is what I was after. If you have a garden gate that keeps slamming shut then I would recommend this item.

It arrived i good time and I fitted it first with the standard ...
I bought this gate closer last August to use on a standard lightweight garden gate. It looked the right item for the job and apart from a couple of reviews commenting on the need to use longer stronger mounting screws i thought this would do. It arrived i good time and I fitted it first with the standard screws then as these ripped out, I used longer screw mountings. It worked excellently for many months until around June when it suddenly stopped the closing function. Despite adjustments this did not improve. I contacted Doorweb through Amazon and asked for a solution to the problem. They asked that I return the closer and to provide photographs of the installation, gate etc. which I did.it then took more than 5 weeks of emailing back and forth beofre I recieved a decision from Doorweb that as the closer had been installed incorrectly, no replacement would be given. This was for 2 reasons. First that the door was operated opening more than 90 degrees, which it was not and how they decided upon this is unclear as they did not see the gate in operation!.Secondly that the centre line of the closer hinge was not in line with the existing gate hinges. In the latter case this is true as it was not possible to mount the closer exactly in line due to the strain put on the closer when opening and closing the gate. It was however just offline by no more than 10 mm which could not possibly impair the performance of the closer. It did operate for 10 months without issue and if this was so crucial I would have expected a problem well before then!It is clear that neither Doorweb nor the manufacturer consider their customers enough to make good the faulty item. indeed in the reply form Doorweb there is mention of what has failed and whether or not it can be repaired or if they will offer to repair or send back the item.I conclude then that if you buy this item with this information, should it fail then do not hold your breath for customer service!
