Harvey [DVD]

What a film. Funny and poignant in equal measure. Well crafted screenplay delivered with aplomb by some of the finest of their time.

In a recent trivia quiz one task was to unscramble anagrams for umpteen famous Easter bunnies.... one was obviously "Harvey" but to my shame I'd never heard of this particular rabbit. So I researched, found out it was a film & bought a used copy on Amazon (always a bargain!!). While obviously of its time, it was sooooo interesting to see James Stewart happily playing such a different role. No spoilers - and please DON'T read the back of the DVD before viewing it - but it was such a feel-good film. James Stewart put his heart and soul into this role & all individualists will be with him all the way. No cop out at the end either, more a feeling that he gently persuaded the world to accept aspects of his world-view - and why not?Any film offering James Stewart, a 6' rabbit and plenty of laughter must be worth watching. It's definitely one I shall watch regularly, particularly if I want to escape from today's world of conformity for a while. A heartwarming attitude towards mental difference from so long ago. Wish I'd met Harvey years ago!!

This is a wonderful, sweet, heart warming comedy about a certain Elwood P. Dowd (magnificent James Stewart), a middle aged gentleman who struggled with reality for 35 years and finally won over it...))) I loved every second of it and it moved me and cheered me up as few other films ever did.As you probably noticed on the cover of the DVD box, this film is basically about a very special relationship existing between Mr Dowd and a somehow shadowy figure, of more or less rabbity nature, called Harvey. As Harvey is very strict and choosy in his social interactions, Mr Dowd is the only one who can actually see Harvey... In fact Harvey is so discreet, that most people tend to disbelief that Harvey exists at all - and some even go as far as calling Mr Dowd just a tinsy weensy crazy...)))This film shows all the adventures of this improbable duo of best friends forever when the day comes for Mr Dowd's family to try to commit him in a psychiatric facility - which, thanks to the incredible charisma and gentle behaviour of Mr Dowd and the clever tricks played by the sneaky Harvey (assuming that he exists of course), will prove to be quite more difficult than anybody could possibly imagine...This film is a most wonderful thing, full of humour, filled with incredibly smart one liners and very intelligent dialog and all of its atmosphere is gentle, heart-warming and soothing. An absolute classic, to buy, see, keep and re-watch again. This is one of the DVds I am never letting go! Enjoy!

Brilliant movie, as you would expect from James Stewart.

We bought it due to someone buying a rabbit who ,had never heard of the film and it was enjoyed by the whole family.

Good film

James Stewart at his amiable best. I love this film.

James Stewart as wonderful as ever; the early part of the movie, with its screwball comedy feel, might not immediately appeal, but stay with it - it doesn't quite have the three tissues appeal of It's A Wonderful Life, but by the end it will still leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling :)
