What power in kw generator would i need

I checked the manual that came with the welder, it states 230V 50-60 Hz and should be monophase supply. You would need to check the output of the generator to see if it complies. The power usage of the welder is low, so I would think that some thing about 2 KW would do. I only use mine from mains. Hope this is of some help. Jim

what thickness steel can it weld

Hello and all I can tell you is that I've successfully welded 10mm with it. As with all arc welding it's possible to weld almost any thickness as long as you know what you're doing. You might need to make 3 or 4 passes on really thick stuff but even a very basic welder with will manage a fairly decent weld with 3.2 rods as long as you prepare it right. I don't pay too much heed to specs because they're mostly manufactures covering their backsides if anything goes wrong. What you should be asking is how thin a steel can it weld and the answer to that is surprisingly thin.

Can you not use these for tig welding?

Hello, Yes you can use this welder for TIG, you need Tig torch,gas regulator and Argon cylinder.

will this welder be o.k with thin car bodywork as most arc welders settings are to high

I highly doubt it, as you said arc welder settings are too high, they are designed to produce deep strong welds in thick material. However, this machine is TIG convertible, so you could use it for bodywork as a TIG machine. Conversion kits are readily sold, so it shouldn't be difficult to do.Hope this helps
