Sword and sorcery classic
This film comes in for a lot of abuse but for fans of 80's sword and sorcery movies it is great entertainment. It's on a par with Conan the Destroyer and personally I prefer it. The one thing that grates is putting Schwarzneggar as top billing because he is a supporting character. I understand that he was personally annoyed by this and felt he had been misled, hence his dislike for the movie.Arnie's character is of course Conan by another name because of a contractual dispute. But he seems to have got over Valeria and there is a love interest between him and Red Sonja. The film plays around with the ridiculous and sexist mythology that RS can only be seduced by a man who has defeated her in battle.Red Sonja is an invention of Roy Thomas from the Marvel comics and has very little in common with Robert E Howard's historical character Red Sonya of Rogatino. Likewise Conan as depicted by Schwarzneggar in Conan the Barbarian is very different to Howard's original. But John Milius's movie was a five star work of genius in its own right. The sequels lightened the tone considerably and are family entertainment. The humorous touches can be annoying but I found the brattish Prince Tarn and his loyal attendant amusing.Of course Brigitte Nielsen's acting skills are limited as were Arnie's at this point in his career. But she looks the part and carries the role perfectly well for anyone not expecting an Ingmar Bergman movie.Another plus point is the Morricone soundtrack. Likewise the scenery is beautiful and some there are some crazy costumes. It's nice to see Sandahl Bergman in a different sort of role as the evil Queen Gedren. There are some truly dire sword and sorcery movies out there, from the misogynistic Deathstalker series through to Ator and its sequels and rubbish like The Quest for the Mighty Sword. People knocking Red Sonja should be made to watch all of these (why not? I have!) and then maybe they would realise that this is one of the best.

Wel... it's a Richard Fleisher movie from the 80s... ( with a fantastic 2 hour documentary )
If you were a kid in the 80s, this movie was one of those VHS tapes that were always around and at the time it was actually a fun ride as there was not much to pick from if you liked fantasy done well. The problem is that like Conan the Destroyer this movie was directed by the classic 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea , Richard Fleisher and in the 80s he was still shooting movies with the same style he would have done in the 50s. And it shows. The action sequences really are dated for example. If you can't stand those types of action scenes where the bad guys all await their turn to attack the hero then stay away from this one , as it becomes really annoying once you notice that which takes all the suspense from the adventure. Exactly as it happened with Conan the Destroyer.So... the movie was already dated in the 80s and right now in 2022, instead of one of those fun cult classics this is more like anomaly from the 80s done in the style of a 50s movies. A good thing is that it stays true to the comics atmosphere. Too bad about the old directing style. But if you were a kid in the 80s and you've seen this one back then, and liked it, then this is a cool addition to your bluray collection. The 4k restoration is really good but it becomes a bit pointless because of how much dated the movie feels. But there's a hidden treasure in this bluray. One the extras is an outstanding modern two hour documentary about Renato Casaro, the illustrator behind a ton of classic movie posters you all know between the 60s and 90s. And of course did the posters for Sonja , Conan, Terminator, Rambo, The Neverending Story and tons of other stuff you know.If you're into illustration, you are going to love this documentary. It made me buy Renato Casaro's book right after I've seen the documentary. It's a fantastic extra for this bluray and it actually deserved a bluray release of its own as it gathered a bunch of prizes in festivals.I wouldn't recommend this bluray 100% if it wasn't for the Renato Casaro documentary in the extras. Therefor 3 stars for the movie 5 stars for the documentary.

Red Sonja
Great adventure film. Don't take too seriously as tongue in cheek in some places. But lasts well through the years.Great fun.

Great blu ray, but box and sleeve damaged
Great movie, nice features, my only issue is that someone had cut my case and it went through to the sleeve as you can see in the picture. Can’t be bothered to send it back.

Compatibility with region A/1 for 4k/Bluray combo version
Before buying this I couldn't find an exact answer about the region codes for this item. Some people seemed to say the bluray worked on region 1 players and others didn't. Everyone agreed the 4k disc was region free. Now that I have it, here is what I found.Discs function exactly as noted on the back of the box.-4k version is region free and will work on region 1/A players (box says region A,B,C supported)-Blu-ray version does not work on any of my region 1/A players I tried (box says region B supported)Personally I think this version is well worth it just for the 4k version.

Extras interesantes.

The original badass heroine!!
A classic that some may love or some may find hilarious depending on your age and what era of movies you grew up with! I for one was happy to add this to my Howard collection! (Even IF this Hyborean Red Sonja is not technically a Howard creation)
