Hard to find product. Great product though

I bought several Medela Calma teats because my son was having problems latching and I wanted him to avoid nipple confusion. The teats only give your baby milk if they are creating a vacuum, i.e. sucking properly like they would on the breast. This means that the baby can use the same technique on the bottle as they do on the breast (and vice-versa). It is a good quality product; well made.Someone from my breastfeeding group complained that the clear part becomes cloudy but if you clean properly in spout it remains clear.The reason I say that this is good for those who are not breastfeeding is because the way the mechanism works the baby controls how much milk they get. I was using a mam bottle before this one, which was good but nowhere as near as good as this one. The mam bottle like every other bottle I know gives out a constant flow of milk, which means the milk dribbles down the baby's mouth a lot and the baby cannot pause. When I started using this teat there was a very noticeable difference in the amount of milk dripping down his face. He also seemed to need less time being burped at the end. I guess that's because the flow of milk was better as gulping milk down is one of the causes of wind. Also, because the baby regulates the flow of milk you don't need to buy a different teat for different ages so no need for slow, medium and fast flow teats.Another benefit of this teat is that if you knock the bottle over milk doesn't spill out (except maybe one drop that was left from the baby's last suck).I think this teat is well worth the money.

Loved by my breastfed baby

I am angry to tears. I have a three months old i purchsed 3 Calma teats for him about 2 months ago, I did a very careful review of them, I saw the pros and cons and laughed at, for example, people who broke them with improper use or said that they are getting moldy - to be clear, if your teats are getting moldy it is your fault, they have to be sterilized every day, mold simply cannot exist if you do it. I liked their look and their function in theory, mimicking breastfeeding from an actual breast as the baby needs to create a vacuum. That was all fine and when I got the teats and used them, everything went brilliantly, we both loved them and thought they were ideal, perfect in every way. My baby never got weird around feeding from the actual breast so i thought i had hit the jackpot.Firstly, i want to make it clear that we have 2 different brands of anti colic teats and bottles, since we top up using formula and Calma teats are exclusively for breastmilk. So I have never used Calmas for anything other than breastmilk and in terms of "anti colic" properties i have something to compare them against with this other brand, Tommee Tippee.So for about a month I used these by the book and i had nothing to complain, they did not become cloudy if cleaned properly, they did not get any mold, they did not break or anything. About a month ago my baby had become really nervous around eating from bottles and he would stop abruptly and start screaming after a few gulps. We always blamed it on the fact that he was very hungry, he always is, a very big baby, has grown up so much above the average, he eats a lot. We thought it was a normal "phase" into his stomach setup and he would one day come out of it, soon. He only got worse with time and at some point we started having difficulty feeding him as he was abviously in some sort of tummy pain that would not let him eat. The pain would eprsist throughout the day and night, no matter how much we were burping him it never went away so we were convinced it must have been colics and his usual constipation.It was sheer chance few days ago he was extremely hungry after we had been in a longer car trip, so he did take to the bottle with extra zeal. And after three gulps he started screaming and crying little tears, caughing, just heartbreaking to watch and hear. And I noticed then that 50ml of milk had been sucked out of the bottle in those 3 darn gulps. You know how bad it hurts when you swallow a bite bigger than you should? Now imagine a baby and the kind of pain he must be in, how startling and how tragic for the parent having to realized that that was what was probably going on every feed!!! When you believe you have done the best for your child, got him the best things, paid the utmost care to everything.I switched the parts between the 3 Calmas I had and indeed i noticed sometimes they "go well" with some parts, but other times they dont and they either drip a little (when they shouldnt drip at all without the baby sucking since thats the whole philosophy of this teats, that the baby needs to create that vacuum to get to the milk) either drip... a lot.The fact is the Calmas have gotten out of shape with use and no longer fit properly. I know what you might think, that perhaps we have used them improperly, perhaps we tighten them too much. I thought about that too! I am actually sure someone at some point did and probably thats what has happened, we have had a lot of people parents relatives coming and helping occasionally. I did tell them what to do, but did I brief absolutely everybody about absolutely every baby item in the house that we have? No and that is not a reasonable thing to expect. Things must be efficient, simple to use, good quality, price can be high if everything else is met. Calma just failed on all of this.The way they work, when they work, is fantastic. However the engineering still is dreadful. For such a hazard to occur when they were in fact overwhelmingly used correctly and in common sense, is not acceptable. For the price you pay, even more unacceptable. I would have inflicted far less damage on my baby by using normal slow flow teats, of any kind. and that is my suggesiton to everyone: use normal teats. You will pay less, have less cleaning to do, and you will burp your baby ANYWAY, just like i do after every single feed because i want to make sure there is no trapped air. And by the way, even when they are still functional, they don't prevent all air from being swallowed by the baby, it obviously depends on the baby and how "tame' she is when eating, So this is just, in my opinion, a scam.Now to compare with the Tommee Tippee we have, these have no issue. Theya re jsut as hard to clean because it requires extra time to do it, but are cheaper. They do drip right from the start, they dont have the same system as the Calma teats, but the drip is not coming in unpredictable volumes, its constant and so the baby does not choke on them.Utter trash. And to add salt to injury, I had to repurchase because my baby now wont take on normal teats! He got used to these when sucking. What i find even more disgusting is that Medela themselves "suggest" you should replace them every 3 months (i guess in case they dont end up breaking before that) for "hygene" reasons.Do better! you should be ashamed of yourselvesEdit: I have received my reordered 3 Calma teats. Not even 3 days of use and one leaks and again, my baby has trouble with air ingestion and flow being too high. Cannot return or ask for a refund on this type of item, but contacted Medela customer service directly. They are unable to refund but have asked me a few questions regarding the way i have been using them (which is strictly according to their leaflet at least for these latest 3). will see what their answer is. I will never use them again, however.

Saw lots of good and bad reviews. The bad reviews were very detailed but I went ahead and bought it anyway. I like it! Baby had taken well to it, just need to make sure you burp them well as they do take in more air than normal bottles, also milk leaks few drops out mouth towards end of feed, I just use the liquid gold back on his face. Overall its good & does the job! And the bad reviews are specific to individual rather than an issue with the teat design!

The idea of this teat is fabulous, but the delivery isn’t quite as good. Yes it’s made switching between bottle and breast seemless and problem free; my son maintained his latch and we had no difficulties in that department, however, that is the only reason I persist with it. Initially it was a godsend and I love the design, however, after about four weeks it started leaking and then the inner membrane tore (I’ve seen a picture of this in a review on here so clearly it’s not just me this happened to). I continued to use it but it became unbearable, dripping on my baby whilst he was feeding, making a sticky mess, and basically being a nusisance. However, I sent Medela an email and despite the product not having warranty, the dealt with my complaint immediately and sent out a brand new replacement teat.BUT...That also started leaking, this time after only two weeks use. It’s infuriating. Again I made a complaint and this time they assured me that it wasn’t design flaw and that I was just unlucky. They sent me out TWO new replacement teats. So I’m giving this product three starts because in terms of design and not affecting direct breastfeeding, it’s fabulous, but the robustness of it clearly lacks.I’ll continue to use these teats because my baby is use to them and I won’t be breastfeeding forever. I’m giving it three stars because it is good, when it lasts, and the Medela customer service team are absolutely amazing. Would I recommend you buy it? Yes! Try it, see if you have better luck than I have, but wash it extra delicately and stick to the recommendation of changing it every three months or sooner. It’s a little pricey but the design ensures your baby doesn’t get windy, continues to breastfeed directly and it’s not huge plastic ghastliness like other teat brands.
