This product says that it is water-resistant. Has anyone tested how "resistant" this backpack actually is? I'll be biking to school in the rain...

My personal experience is that the backpack will hold up under a mild wetting, but if you're going to try to walk 5-10 minutes in a downpour, spray on some waterproofing material or you are going to be rather upset.

Is there a strap that holds the laptop in place? Or a flap that covers it?

it's a laptop pocket with a thick strap.... the flap would be much better but after a year of school it still looks New and is comfortable.... the best part is the shoulder straps thick and very comfortable... hope I answered to your satisfaction... :-)

I want a roomy bag for my macbook pro 13 inch, How suitable is this one ?

I bought this bag for my 15in macbook pro. So your 13 will fit well. The bag has plenty of space for book and notebooks. I believe there may be a 13in version of this back somewhere but you will not have the same amount of storage space. So i recommend this one. It is built very well and while having plenty of space isn't a huge bag. I would say its the perfect size.

Would this provide enough protection for a laptop if I brought this to an airport, through security and used as my carry-on/personal item on flight?

I use it for taking my laptop through security and on the plane, and haven't had any damage done to my laptop. I actually find that it's easier to take that laptop out of this bag than it was to take it out of my over-the-shoulder computer bag. I would take care to not throw the bag down on a hard surface (or the floor) if you're setting it down upright, as the bottom of the bag doesn't have any cushion. The back and the front are pretty well padded, but not the base.
