Best trash can I've ever used, but not dog proof :(
I was hesitant to spend this much on a trash can, but so many reviews talked about it being dog proof. I was ready to spend any amount to solve my dog & trash issue. For the first week things were great. The can holds a ton of trash (thanks to the very cool custom bags and fit removing an inner bucket.) The step was smooth and silent. It closes flush and therefore seemed to solve the dog problem. It also is exceptional at holding in odors. In fact my husband and I both commented that we were oddly attached and impressed with this trash can. Not something I expected to get so much pleasure from, but alas it really is an amazing product. That is until today. Three of my dogs are large and crafty but were not able to get into the can. The largest did step on the lever once but he wasn't smart enough to know what he did or how to do it again. He is a normal dog so that makes sense. The smallest dog (pictured) was able to break in. The thing is I'm not sure if I can blame the product. You see this little yellow lab is actually a rabid raccoon in a dog's body. Her intelligence, dedication and dexterity defy the laws of biology and physics. As you can see there is no remorse in her eyes, despite my being 8 months pregnant and needing to clean this up by crawling around on the floor. That isn't pictured because you can bet that if anyone else was home to take the photo, they would have been cleaning this up instead of me.In conclusion, who should splurge on this product?People without animals - absolutely!People with normal pets - you bet!People tricked into adopting a radicalized terrorist parading around in a cute dog disguise - definitely no.

Company known for high-quality, well-designed products.
Pricy, but buying ultimately saves money in the long run, as quality lasts, while discount products are designed to rapidly fall apart. This brand is well-known for making high-quality products, the can has one opening for trash, and another for emptying. Best of all, their trash bags are stronger, more durable than ‘normal’ trash bags, and it comes with a replaceable oder control in it’s lid.

Easy Way to Remove the "Creaking" Noise for this Trash Can
This is a solid and aesthetically appealing trashcan. We had an old Simplehuman with a plastic pedal for 11+ years, and the pedal broke so we'd glue it back and it'd break in a different spot again, etc. So finally we got this as a replacement a few months ago. Regular 13 gallon bags fit ok without the bag slipping down if you don't want to spend extra money for the form fitting 'J' size bags. The main reason for writing this review is to address the poor reviews that have to do with either a creaking/groaning noise from the hinge and the 'violent snapping' noise from the locking liner rim. These two annoyances seem to have made people grow to hate this trashcan. First, the creaking noise also happened to ours as well (within a few months). It seems to be due to the metal push rod rubbing against the plastic part of the lid that makes it open. I think after some use this mechanical assembly 'settles in' a little and the noise is from the friction/rubbing. Yes, this probably should be engineered out by Simplehuman (if anyone from the company is reading this). But the simple fix that costs nothing and 10 seconds of your time is to take a small piece of electrical tape (I used the standard black variety), open up the lid and liner all the way to keep it held open, and tape around the top of the metal push rod you see exposed. That should do it. No more 'creaking/groaning' noise when you open it. Simplehuman could just put a piece of tape or teflon to address this and no one would be complaining anymore about this.As others have pointed out, to avoid the loud snapping noise when closing the liner rim, when the lid and the liner rim are in the fully open position and you want to close the liner rim, just reach underneath the liner rim and with your thumbs and pull outward on both sides and close the rim so that the rim isn't forced down past the curved plastic guides (these are on the sides of the hinge area to keep the lid open when changing a bag). This makes the closing process quiet. You shouldn't just push down on the lid and force them closed at the same time or the liner rim will snap down violently (and probably eventually break the plastic guides or the lid). That's all. Hope this helps some folks regain their sanity with this trashcan.

Nice unit. Fingerprint free.
Fingerprint free as advertised which is a plus for me as I clean SS appliances often. We used the scent blocker inside the lid to keep the smells out. We really like this unit, and it looks very upscale to others we have purchased in the past.
