So do this on a good drying day
I used this as a fire retardant on large number of cotton curtains.Dissolve 100g sachet (how it was supplied) in 1 litre of boiling water.Add 7 litres of cold in a plastic tub (eg. baby bath, solid laundry basket or garden tub).Dip each curtain -freshly washed with no fabric conditioner- until well soaked throughout, lifting to drain as much as possible before hanging out to drip dry.So do this on a good drying day!!!Do not spin dry- you want as much of the solution as possible to stay in the fabric.I tested this when dry & the cotton would not burn when I took my sample away from a candle flame in which it only smoulder & did not burst into flames.I do not recommend this method for use with any other fabrics- It did NOT work on the linings which were clearly not 100% cotton & went up in fierce flames when tested when dry!!! We have had to replace the old curtains !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Approach with caution
I bought this to dissolve out a siezed piece of steel from aluminium. There are a variety of sources online which indicate that this is a feasible method. The advantage should be that the alum solution dissolves ferrous metals but doesn't affect non-ferrous metals. The technique is used by clockmakers to dissolve fine drill bits which break off in the hole.My experience: I heated the piece in question in a solution of this alum - it fizzed away, but appeared to attack the aluminium more than the steel. My bad for poor chemistry - maybe there is more than one type of alum.I also make pickles, which this seems to be aimed at. I have to agree with another reviewer that it seemed to be a dirty product: the contents were an off-white color and when I dissolved them, there was an insoluble brown residue left floating on the top of the liquid. What's that? Do I want it in my pickles? The product does indeed come in handy 100g sachets.
