... of a star vehicle for the Douglas and Lancaster good though they are
Not a patch on John Fords version but well made more of a star vehicle for the Douglas and Lancaster good though they are.A few plot holes appear especially the shot of Lancaster riding 700 miles in two scenes! thought the blu ray transfer was very good though as has been said having a big screen TV makes all the difference. Sturges fleshes out the two female leads well too,Jo Van Fleet as the put upon Kate and the very hot and sexy Virginia Mayo as Earp's love interest. Historically inaccurate, not all the Clanton's died that day and Johnny Ringo was found later in a wooded area either shot by Holliday or by suicide and was Earp just a lawman or a cold blooded killer?the jury seems to be out on that.Pity there wasn't any extra's for the 60th anniversary too still its a top film and made back in the days if no swearing or soft porn scenes

Classic Western
Have been meaning to add this to my DVD collection for awhile, so as it's Xmas I treated myself.A classic western with two Hollywood greats (Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster) and strong supporting cast, DeForest Kelley (Star Trek) and Lee Van Cleef among them. All the things you want from a western and another version of event around and at The OK Corral. If you're a fan of the story, I'd also recommend "Tombstone" (Kurt Russell) and "Wyatt Earp" (Kevin Costner).I'd also recommend the comedy "Tough Guys" with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster, with Eli Wallach, that makes plenty of references to the westerns they were in !!

Blu-ray review - its ok
I've not see the DVD so can't say how it compares but the blu-ray is ok rather than great. Sure there's no grain, or specs or anything else but neither is is pin sharp either. The sound is 5.1 but nothing special - it just sounds ok. Still for an older transfer it's more than acceptable and the story itself is quite good.

Fortunately not a history documentary!
Fortunately not a history documentary! Take it more like a Hollywood film based in something that happened a long time ago in the legendary west and that nobody cares what really happened, what really cares is that they made a great western out of the whole thing. Like take the righteous Wyatt Earp, shaped like a model of goodness and honesty played by no other than Burt Lancaster who plays this part consciously consistent with serenity and surely integrity, and then The Doc Holliday although technically an outlaw deep in his heart he knows the difference between good and bad, his pal Earp knows this and that’s why they end up in the gunfight, he plays the part beautifully alternating between these typically western conflicts. But then we also have the dramatic, loud and unpredictable Kate Fisher, played by Jo Van Fleet a great actress in her own right, she played wonderfully the wicked mother of James Dean in “East for Eden”, I will never forget that performance; here she has unfortunately a miserable minor role that she on one way or the other manages to fulfill masterly. O yes we mustn’t forget the ravishing beautiful Laura Denbow played by the ravihing beautiful Rhonda Fleming. And then we have the magnificent presence of both Lee van Cleef and a very young Dennis Hopper. I must also mention what I didn’t like and why I gave only 4 stars, it is the horrific main theme song by Frankie Lane. They don’t make westerns like this anymore, so enjoy this one!

A tightly constructed classic with some great acting. Perfect!
This is a great film. Both me and my wife enjoyed it so much more than Tombstone. This era of film featured less on the big set pieces which are common today and more on character development. There is still plenty of action but the result here feels more intimate like you are getting to see what makes the character tick more.Watch for when Douglas's Holiday gets drink thrown in his face by Johnny Ringo. The seething anger that comes through is electric and makes the scene incredibly tense. Certainly something Hollywood struggles to do now.

Tight fight
Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957) is a film based on a real event which took place on October 26, 1881. It was directed by John Sturges and features a screenplay written by novelist Leon Uris, starring Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas; the movie's supporting cast included Rhonda Fleming, John Ireland, Jo Van Fleet, Martin Milner, Dennis Hopper, Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef, DeForest Kelley, Earl Holliman and Charles Herbert. The Gunfight at the OK Corral was a gunfight that took place at about 3:00 pm on Wednesday, October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, and is generally regarded as the most famous gunfight in the history of the American Old West. The gunfight, believed to have lasted only about thirty seconds, was fought between the outlaw Cowboys Billy Clanton, Tom McLaury and his brother Frank McLaury, and the opposing lawmen:Virgil Earp and his brothers Morgan and Wyatt Earp, aided by Doc Holliday acting as a temporary deputy of Virgil. Cowboys Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne ran from the fight unharmed, but Ike's brother Billy Clanton was killed, along with both McLaurys. Lawmen Holliday and Morgan and Virgil Earp were wounded. Only Wyatt Earp came through the fight unharmed. The fight has come to represent a time in American history when the frontier was open range for outlaws opposed by law enforcement that was spread thin over vast territories, leaving some areas unprotected. So much for an excerpt from Wikipedia, which has a "true" and a "film" article under that title, which run to many pages, but which are not really relevant for the appreciation of the movie. The movie, perhaps a bit on the long side, develops the story and its many windings in a clear way and has excellent direction and camera work. Acting is also notable, impeccable for the males.192 - The Gunfight at the OK Corral (John Sturges, 1957, 122') - 10/7/2012

Loved this move, watched it years ago, i do enjoy a good Western, and that's exactly what you get with Lancaster and Douglas, one of their best in my opinion, well worth the money. 10 out of 10, on all fronts
