Cosmos Season 1

Listened to Neil on The Life Scientific on a podcast last week and thought I would 'give it a go'. Well having just watched the first 4 episodes back to back tonight I am hooked. This should be shown to EVERY school child as it simply explains the universe and how it works in a nutshell without the need for 'faith' but based on the scientific principle. Where we don't know the answer yet - well that's ok but don't just make something up to fit the answer. My only regret is I did not buy it on blu ray - but at least now I can share it with every one I know! After Brexit, Trump and Fake News it is a travesty that our 'leaders' lack the science education that could be such a positive influence and direct a mire positive and enlightened future. Go buy today and enjoy the reality of the cosmos.

This is an amazing series; think "Walking with Dinosaurs" does Stars and Scientists. It manages to explain science and the universe and the History of the Science while being utterly gripping. We four episodes in and so far we've learned about evolution, comets, killer asteroids, the mindblowing size and age of the universe and -- through animations -- the tragic fate of Giordano Bruno, Newton and Hooke's feud... It's not an anti-religious program per se -- Tyson is generally in awe of creation -- but it's all about "show me the evidence" and the scientific method. There's not much wriggle room for creationists and evolution deniers. This makes it a great way to inoculate your kids against that kind of thinking while at the same time enthuse them with reverence for the interconnected universe in which we live.

Loved the series and now I can watch this whenever I want. All children should see this. All adults should see this. It's awe inspiring - though a little cheesy at times. Beautiful and wonderful storytelling. Really humanises the journey of science, which of course is also the journey of humanity. I saw the world differently after this series. I also own the soundtrack and it's gorgeous. Compulsory viewing in my opinion.

EXCELENT. Great DVD. My Tyson is engaging and easy to listen to and shows the level of interest that allows you to enjoy not only the presentation but the style of the presentation itself. Have the original COSMOS by Carl Sagan an DVD and still enjoy watching it. This is certainly a match for Mr Sagan's original series but considerable enhanced by the modern look and production

Several things draw this series hosted by the charismatic Neil deGrasse Tyson. Firstly it is all the second rate cartoons. Secondly it is all the tedious repetition. And thirdly there is too little cosmos and too much fill. The series seems like a firework in imagery, but not the kind of imagery that carries the narrative anywhere, not consistent images of the real wonders available. So it seems made on the cheap. Would I buy the series if I knew? Maybe, because it is not overly expensive. But quality-wise the producers have a lot to learn from BBC, not the least in using actors to reproduce historical scientific events. But I love deGrasse Tyson's approach to the stupidity of religion. So, it's okay, but not what it should have been.

Yes absolutely brilliant, and I would say that it will take pride of place on my shelf next to Carl Sagan's original Cosmos series. I think it is full of interesting facts and history and is very well presented. I would have to say that maybe I was just a little bit disappointed by the fact they used animation for much of it; I think it would have been better to use real actors as in the original series. But I've since got used to this. Of course, Tyson is not Sagan and the narrative is not as poetic and charming as the original, but it's still a fantastic series and perhaps it is a little unfair or even unnecessary to compare it with the original. Overall, it is a worthy "update".

A very good series to watch in general. I love watching the series myself.

Although this is not quite as good as the original series. Neil deGrasse Tyson is certainly a worthy successor. This is not work for him. It's a hobby. It's clear he loves talking about this subject. There is though, rather an over-reliance on CGI, even though that's understandable condsidering it's about space, and maybe too much time in the ship of the imagination rather than just on the ground, on location with no effects, just talking science. Can someone tell him cosmos is pronounced 'CosMOSS', not 'CosMOWSE'. Just a bit of nit-picking. Anyway, a great series.
