Acceptable Amateur Investigator Device
It's difficult to rate a device, the accuracy of which cannot be easily checked. The Amazon ad states accuracy of 10%, but the handbook supplied gives 20%. I wanted the meter to compare different environments and effectiveness of filters. For that reason absolute accuracy is not so important. I'd be more than happy if the device was anything like 20% accurate. To test if it was giving anything like reasonable readings I used cigarette smoke from a single cigarette in a sealed room. Fine particulates (0.3um to 0.1um) from cigarettes is well documented. I found number of particulates to be within a factor of two of the theoretical level. Given the various uncertainties in such a crude experiment, I see that result as very satisfactory. On the negative side the accompanying manual is clearly translated from Chinese, and is very unclear in places. The section on "calibration" is, to my mind, totally unintelligible. Some other items in the Amazon ad don't seem to make sense; the sampling time is fixed, not variable as stated. Charging can be by the supplied transformer (American plug) as well as USB. Manual says 999 samples can be stored, not 2000 as in the ad.I have "played with" several of these relatively cheap particle counters and I have to say I have the greatest confidence in this one. To have high confidence you have to spend well over a thousand pounds on a device, so if you're looking for a decent affordable device for comparative home use then this should fit the bill.
