Hatha Yoga Pradipika is divided into different portions, each of which explain a certain part of Yoga. Hatha Yoga involves the yoga of the body, and yet this book does not restrict itself to the physical aspects of yoga, but delves deeper to how yoga can awaken the chakras and the kundalini energy, helping the person who practices it achieve spiritual liberation. There are different upadesas or chapters to Hatha Yoga Pradipika, out of which the shatkarmas are discussed elaborately in one of them. These are yogic practices which are created to completely purify the body. There are different methods like neti, involving saline water through the nostrils, and the cleaning of sinuses among other things. There are other practices like dhauti and basti, which are described in detail. There are other upadesas that describe tantric practices in yoga, involving various methods which are all designed as enemas to cleanse the body. There are different exercises, for example to improve the frenulum of the tongue and to awaken the kundalini shakti effectively. The final upadesa is about samadhi, which is the final meditative state of yoga where the practitioner is said to become one with the cosmos. It talks of the alchemy of life, and how this state of spiritual enlightenment can be attained through continuous practice. Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a translation of Swami Svatmarama s original text, making it palatable and easier to understand than the original. To understand where yoga comes from, read this book
This is the book to give you the full picture of what Hatha yoga really is, although you have to put it into a historical perspective as some of the practices are a bit "out there". Anybody that wants a deeper understanding of yoga should read this book first. This gives a view of where yoga has come from. I cannot recommend this book enough, I could hardly put it down, and I will re-read it in six month's or so.

The Hatha Bible
I chose this book because I wanted something introductory and easy to follow. This ticks both boxes and more. The layout is clear and concise and there are diagrams too that help to illustrate the postures. It covers all aspects of Hatha yoga, from beginners to advanced, yet it's still a fantastic read for somebody new to the practice. If you're just starting out or have years of experience this is the book for you. Highly recommended!

Great resource for aspiring yogi
I simply love Bihar books. Every time I read them I start to realise that there's much more to yoga than asana. The book is well written, language is simple and precise.

A Detailed Exposition on the Origins of Hatha Yoga
Hatha yoga as we know it today has many roots in this work, which is actually comparatively recent, being "only" a few hundred years old. The author very nicely explains each verse in clear, modern English, and her grasp of, and passion for the topic is present. The Pradiipika needs this sort of analysis, because just reading a translation of the verses does very little in getting to what the original creator of the work meant in many cases. Many practices are given, from cleansing techniques, to bandhas and other bodily-related methods, to experiencing various meditative states of consciousness.
