Outstanding. *Updated*
I had the previous USB 2.0 version of this hard disk adapter and it worked well enough but it just wasn't fast enough for my needs. I'm a tech who spends a lot of time doing data recovery jobs and it helps to be able to dock hard drives with the added performance gains of USB 3.0. I tested this one on a couple of SATA 7200RPM drives and was reaching average speeds of about 125MB/s which is consistent with USB 3.0 performance. This version also comes with LED indicators to show disk activity when in use which is pretty handy. Everything needed comes in the box so I can easily attach SATA or IDE drives in both laptop and desktop form factor. It works very well and is worth every penny. Highly recommended. **Update** Shortly after reviewing this product I discovered a problem which I thought I would post as it might help others who own this or are thinking or purchasing it. I originally tested the device with SATA drives which worked flawlessly but when trying to data scrub a couple of old IDE (PATA) drives I found they could not be detected. I made sure that power was running to the hard drives, USB connections were secure and IDE jumper pins were set correctly but still no joy. I bought two of these adapters and both had the exact same problem when testing on two separate workstations which made it highly unlikely that it was a device failure. At this point I decided to call StarTech who have a UK local rate support number listed on the product manual, handy! I was on hold for less than 1 minute when a support rep with an American accent asked me to give him the product number and a description of the problem. After giving him this info along with my troubleshooting steps already taken he explained it could be a detection timing issue on the device IDE controller. He asked me to disconnect everything and then power the drive up again without connecting to the computer via USB for 30 seconds, after this he asked me to plug in the USB cable and it worked! The same for the other IDE drives too. It should be noted that this is only necessary when attaching IDE drives NOT regular SATA drives. I was extremely happy with StarTech for providing such excellent support and would give this product additional review stars if it were possible!

Perfect for Undertaking any Drive Transfers or Diagnostics
I've used the previous Startech version and of course that wasn't USB 3.0 compatible, so I had to buy another kit. I use this for hard drive migration, backup, troubleshooting, Drive Maintenance etc. It is great if you don’t want to internally connect another drive to your main PC system. Using the USB interface works well and keeps things simple. The interface has all the connections you will need - IDE, SATA, PATA etc. and power for the drive itself. I've used 2 of these simultaneously to make an exact copy of a drive using appropriate software and have never had any issues at all. Great piece of kit and can be a life saver if you need to access a drive quickly without all the hassle of opening up your PC and hooking it in and having to muck about with your boot settings.

Couple of issues, but fantastic support service and ultimately a great device
After a slightly shaky start I have to say I'm seriously impressed with this device. The build quality is much better than I was expecting for a brand I've never really come across before, but everything is solid, the cabling feels very firm and well connected and the device has clearly been thought through in terms of design and features. I've used it to access, backup and erase several old hard drives already, both SATA and IDE, with very little fuss. I did have a couple of issues at first but a combination of very useful comments in this reviews section (thank you users "Traffic" and "Michelle Outram") and a seriously impressive level of customer service via the StarTech online chat system helped sort everything out. To summarise, in case it helps other people, I had two problems: 1. An old IDE drive that simply did not appear, although the device itself was recognised 2. A SATA drive that gave an error message along the lines of "USB Device has Malfunctioned" Problem 1 was fixed thanks to a combination of "Traffic"'s comment, which suggested powering the drive on for ~30seconds before connecting the USB header to the PC, and a tip from the support staff that the power cable includes a small header that plugs into the base of the hard drive connector itself to provide extra oomph if the USB cable isn't sufficient. This combination of tweaks enabled me to boot several IDE drives I'd given up on years ago! Problem 2 was slightly more cryptic and initially defeated the customer support advisor I was chatting with (though, to his credit, he opened an ongoing call specifically for me so I could go away and try another couple of drives at my leisure and has contacted me since to query if everything worked out, which is excellent service in my eyes). It turns out that, as user "Michelle Outram" has pointed out before me, this device does not currently play that well with Windows 10 USB 3.0 drivers. This is unfortunate and I would urge anyone buying specifically for USB 3 speeds that only has access to Windows 10 to be wary of this! If you get the message I received, this appears to be the problem and there's not much you can do unless StarTech release more up-to-date drivers (I have contacted their customer support regarding this and will update if anything changes). In the meantime, I'm content just plugging in SATA drives to USB 2.0 slots (the issue does not appear to occur with IDE drives at all if you just let them boot up before plugging in). Quick tip though, if like me you're modern laptop only has USB 3.0 ports, do not despair! Simply buy (or pull out of a drawer, like I did) an old USB extension lead or multi-hub and plug in via that instead. Chances are, the old lead will be using USB 2.0 plug headers so will effectively work as a "step down" cable to get around the issue. Works for me at any rate! UPDATE: After further communication with the StarTech support team they have assured me this is an issue with my hardware not running the latest USB 3.0 drivers. I'm not totally convinced, as at least one of the PCs I tested with already is, but I have since found a Windows 10 PC which can use this device via USB 3.0 ports. To be clear, this means you should try to updated your motherboard's USB drivers, the StarTech device itself does not have any drivers. Overall then, I've been very impressed with the device. It works well, it's well designed and despite a few initial issues it has served its purpose tremendously. It also came well equipped, with mains cables for EU, US and UK plug types and a relatively decent instruction manual. It's worked on four SATA drives and three IDE drives, only giving me an issue on two older IDE drives, one of which is pre-1990 (which StarTech do warn will likely not work) and the other turned out to be fried, so not a problem with the adaptor at all. Definite thumbs up!

Works fine
Obviously a bit expensive but seems well made and works fine.

Needed it to sift through some old HDDs as well as a pile of archive CDs whilst having an old Pioneer IDE drive connected and this worked a treat.
