Fun For The Whole Family
The traditional view of a symphony performance is one of a stuffy conductor and a stone-quite audience. Well, Andre Rieu will have none of that! Andre conducts and plays violin (both superbly). Throughout the performance he will make jokes and interact with the audience. During The Blue Danube, he encourages the audience to get up and waltz. The orchestra is the Johann Strauss Orchestra and you will immediately notice the beautiful waltz gowns on the ladies. Wonderful music and some amazing vocals round out an amazing program. I first saw part of this on PBS with my daughter and father (4 and 82 respectively). They both loved it. I immediately ordered this DVD and watched it with my daughter. Sever tracks into the DVD my wife forbid me from watching when anyone was trying to sleep. She heard my laughter from the other side of the house. This was because of something done during a Spanish bullfighting number (you'll know the piece). Suffice it to say, if more symphonies performed like this then classical music would be far more popular among young people. Watch this one. Now.

When Irish eyes are twinkling, keep yours peeled for the bull!
Is the bull corny or cute? Two guys are hoofing it in a costume, so you decide. But please, don't have a cow. Espana Cani is a really fun piece of Spanish pasodoble music and things are supposed to get LIVE-ly IN DUBLIN. Andre Rieu is a master at keeping his audience spellbound and delighted. They are at the edge of their seats when he promises a birthday gift for Uncle Paddy. No one expects a life-size "doll" - made in England, the Dutchman quips, but she's Brazilian - singing the Song of Olympia from the Tales of Hoffmann. As far as my little granddaughter is concerned, the Irish got their pot of gold with the bull and the doll. She also approves fully of charmed couples waltzing in front of the stage, until the Maestro pretends to lose his concentration and The Blue Danube abruptly stops flowing. He clearly cannot afford to fiddle around when he joins John Sheahan of The Dubliners in playing the wildly popular Irish Washerwoman. In terms of speed acceleration, it's the "bullet train" number in this very fun, yet elegant concert at The Point Theatre, a former train terminal in Dublin. I fell in love with Teun Ramaekers and his superb artistry on the flute. Like many of his fellow orchestra members, he dazzles with musical and comedic talents. I know Beethoven approved, because he showed up with his Ode to Joy. LIVE IN DUBLIN has the feel of a satisfying family reunion. The more I attend, the more I identify with those smiling Irish and Dutch eyes. If you are a classical-music elitist and smell a rat, this Mozart nut gives you permission to jump ship. Why else would Andre Rieu play the TITANIC song, "My Heart Will Go on"?

Just BRILLANT
Andre Rieu & the Johann Strauss orchestra in Dublin is just fantastic and outstanding, probably more than in previous DVDs. Dublin is my Alma Mater and I grew up in Medical School there at the time John Sheehan & the Dubliners were peaking in popularity after their huge success at The Royal Albert Hall,London. It was nice to see the usual lively John(as guest artist here) again, but with a different beard colour, taking Andre and the Johann Strauss orchestra along in 'Marino waltz'(John's own composition) & 'Irish Washerwoman'.I felt the same contagious, pleasant and cheerful shivers as the audience had during these interpretations. I recognised and loved the short sceneries on the DVD like 'The Temple Bar & the Guinness pints' 'O'Connell bridge over the Lifey river,Grafton street and Trinity College, the greenery of 'The Emerald Isle' etc. All the other interpretations are a very carefully chosen repertoire of well known tunes in Ireland and the usual 'Andre at his best' violin/orchestra favourites . The interpretation of 'The Waltz of all the waltzes of the world' was beautifully done with a most remarkable humourous ingenuity 'A la Andre' added to it. My personal five star tune 'The last rose' is well interpreted as an entirely instrumental number though I missed Suzan Erens' vocal interpetation. I am a bit disappointed that Suzan did not interprete this one or any other number in this concert though she is seen in the choir at the back of the orchestra. As we have seen in previous compilations e.g. 'Flying Dutchman', Suzan is really at her best in this tune- This tune fits her and she fits the tune! She really gets locked in the audience's hearts with her vocal interpretation. The Titanic film theme music 'My heart will go on' is indeed most appropriate in this concert in Dublin as the actual film gives us a glimpse of the Irish migration westward across the Atlantic in that tragic year of 1912.Besides, the ship had about fifteen thousand Irish workers to build it.Also, after Cherbourg, the last port of call ever for that unsinkable ship was Cobh in the South of Ireland (at that time known as Queensland). It was from there that it sailed away on the 11April1912 for its tragic end 4000 meters under the sea. Teun Ramakers and his flute comes out beautifully in conveying the appropriate emotions to the audience as he does again in 'The last rose of summer'. The quality of the pictures and sound on an HD video player & LCD with sound surround are just outstanding though the DVD itself is not HD. I personnally prefer a vertical listing and numbering of the various tunes on the back of the DVD box rather than the way it is written. After this concert I feel Andre and the Johann Strauss orchestra should spread their wings to be a music ambassador to other places of the planet and lead the way ,to quote him, "To make the Planet a different place" through music. They have the necessary appropriate talents to modify the hearts & minds of their audience irrespective of age.... .

Of all the DVD's I own of Andre Rieus, I've NEVER been dissatisfied, everyone has given me such joy. His DVD's are so definitely visual. Not just the music but the beautiful dresses of the orchestra, and elegant formal dress of the men. It is a combination of music, visual, the back-ground, well, just everything that makes it THE best DVD's I've ever owned. I think my total now is l6..and there's not one that I don't enjoy...some more than others. I can't think of a better evening than to sit down with Andre on the screen, a night truly well spent.
