Celestron 93973 Skyportal Wifi Module, Black

Having the ability to connect to the Scope Mount with Mobile or PC Software, is a real eye opener. Why I didn't get one earlier I am unsure, but I am now regretting all those frustrating nights playing around with the handset. PTN: the handset is OK but a little clunky for me, and you can fully control and track with the handset, it's just that the WiFi connect is way, way easier..

Been using this for a couple of years now. It's easier to set up now an use with the celestron cpwi software. I use this wifi adapter with an avx mount, starsence alignment camera , an phd2. I normally connect it to the home wifi an have used it with windows laptops as well as an android tablet. It can be used in adhoc mode as well but as I sit in the garage on a laptop it doesn't keep the signal as well as connecting to the home wifi. I like the wifi dongle but I do feel it is a little overpriced compared to a wifi dongle for a PC.

Well, the only but I have found is that it is not currently fully compatible with Samsung Note 9. I have reported this to their support, who incidentally are very helpful. The problem that I had was that it would not connect to the telescope in Direct mode on my Note 9. However, it did with my Galaxy S8 and Nexus 9. So I was able to set it up to work via AP mode, as in they both connect to a WiFi router. This, if you have a smartphone or tablet, is much better than using their GPS add on, which costs more. Usability, well, so far Celestron have not been able to summon up a clear night for me, I even missed the blood moon 2 days ago because of cloud and fog here.

Build quality feels like it could break at any time ,but it is really easy to use. Plug it in connect your phone and away you go. Love how I can control my scope from my phone now.

Somewhat expensive for what it is and it feels a bit flimsy but it works well.

Well worth buying, makes using telescope more intuitive and fun to use.

Instant success with Sky Safari 6 Pro on my Android tablet. It arrived yesterday, and I've used it once (today). A neat device. Essential ? not all all. Is it fun ? Absolutely, yes. Value for money ? errr.. no; let's not talk about that aspect: It's a horribly expensive little piece of kit... way overpriced. I would suggest a cost of 25% would be a fair asking price. This is why I am rating it 3 stars only. Anyway, if you want a cool gadget go for it.. but you can get a decent eyepiece for the money, a barlow, or a solar filter.. unless of course you have all that. One of the advantages of using Sky Safari 6 pro is that you can look up objects that are not in the handset database (because it only has a limited amount of star catalogue names included). Sky Safari has a much larger database. If you want mainly Messier objects, then stick to the handset... it's less to worry about.

As the saying goes, a millionaire is a billionaire who got into astronomy! This device is very simple to use and connects via the AUX port and replaces my handset for linking the mount to the computer. Very expensive for what it is but it works far better than the in-built wi-fi on the mount. I have disabled the wi-fi on the mount and now simply use the dongle. So far every time I turn on the mount, the wi-fi for the dongle is found and connected to on the laptop and aligning and slewing using CPWI requires fewer cables now so the whole rig looks far tidier. So far this has been worth the money.

I wish I had gotten this sooner. I am using it on a Celestron Nexstar 8se and it works great! It easily connected to my iPad and my home Wi-Fi. I am using the iPad with the Celestron App for aligning the telescope as well as for the go-to features instead of the handset. It is so much easier with the app. I did see the benefit of having a motorized focused after trying this out with the app and have ordered that too. I’ll put a review up for that once I get it in and have a chance to put it to use. I definitely recommend this wi-if module, just don’t forget to also get an accessory port splitter if you also use StarSense or other accessories.

Der WLAN Adapter für mein CPC 800 funktioniert "plug and play": in den AUX Port eingestöpselt, das vom Adapter neu aufgespannte WLAN mit dem Smartphone verbunden, Celestron Skyportal App oder Skysafari App gestartet und Teleskop verbinden: läuft. Einziger Nachteil: verbindet man sein Smartphone mit dem Celestron WLAN Adapter im "Direct Mode", kann man nicht mehr aufs Internet zugreifen. Da hilft nur der AP Mode: bei diesem verbindet man den Adapter in das bereits vorhandene WLAN bei sich zu Hause (oder unterwegs z.B. mit einem mobilen WLAN AP) und greift dann darüber auf den Adapter zu.

EASY OF USE

It took a little less than 5 minutes to have the wifi module running and that's because I was lazy and didn't want to make mistake. This accessory can in fact be completely functional in few seconds, from its box to the telescope port and Skyportal running. It is that simple. Just follow the few steps on the instructions coming with it and it will work its magic in an instant. I received the latest generation of this SkyPortal accessory and no firmware update seemed to be needed since it worked straight out of the box. Good wifi signal when connecting directly to it with an iPhone. The control response time is instantaneous. It is expensive for such a little piece of hardware but the freedom and functionality it provides is priceless. Control input from wifi device is as accurate as if it was running from the hand controller. And it is much more convenient. No wire, no hassle, and Skyportal interface is fun to use. I'm not deceived. Can't wait to get my 8SE outside tonight with my kids. Just make sure that an 8SE is installed forward enough on the rail so the focus knob don't get into contact with the module. I can almost reach zenith (85 degree up) with the 8SE 1.25" diagonal. Edit: I finally got out tonight with my 8SE equipped and its new Skyportal wifi. This device is a game changer. It hasn't faulted during the whole night, connection was strong and alignments were always spot on. It is so great to tap onto a clestial object in Skyportal app, hit goto and see the scope pivoting and aligning towards its target by itself. The freedom that this wifi device provides is priceless. My little girl thought it was a sorcerer trick when she saw her Jupiter on the phone screen and watch the scope align to it in real time when tapping GoTo. A nice educative tool.
