Can I put a call through from one handset to another, something that the previous model couldn't do

Yes very easy as others have described. (1) You can call another handset whilst on an external call as Kev explains. (2) A person at another hanset can simply press green to join an external call as Sean explains. You can then either stay in the conversation in a conference call (2 handsets plus the external call) or press Red to leave the external caller talking to the other handset. Under Settings > Call settings > Auto Join Calls you can decide if this joining requires a confirmation from the other internal handset or happens automatically. At home we have auto ON so really easy to pass calls around the house.(3) You can make a purely internal hanset to handset call using the contacts list button, select and press Green.

I have 4 incoming phone lines as we are a busy sales based company. Each line has its own bt phone socket how many base units would I need?

You would need 4 base stations and handsets to do that with this model. A tried and tested solution would be to port your numbers to VoIP and use something like the Yealink W52P and handsets to have 1 base station that supports 4 sip accounts/lines.

Where is the answer machine located, is it built into one of the handsets?

Hi does this work say in a very large house with 13 inch thick brick walls??

I use these phones at work, they are mainly used in a 20000 square foot warehouse that is full of pallet wracking with very few empty bays. I know that's not the same as thick old walls but the phones hold up to the furthest point from the base stations.
