what size are the squares on the paper?

The squares on the paper are, light line, l cm x 1 cm, and darker line, 2 cm x 2 cm so 4 of the l cm squares. The roll is much better value for money than the 2 or 3 sheets you can buy individually and of course you can have a pattern piece as long as you wish without having to piece. It is particularly useful for drawing out a pattern which is given small scale in a book, or for drafting your own pattern. It is fairly thin, (though no more fragile than the paper in a bought pattern), but if it's a pattern I intend to use often, I generally transfer it to brown paper. I would recommend this product.

Can you trace patterns with this paper?

Yes. It works well but you still may need to adapt a pattern to fit you making various versions of the pattern. Nina

Can you sew this like Swedish tracing paper to make a toile?

No, it's more of a thicker tracing paper than the normal tissue paper supplied in patterns. I use it when I have altered a bought pattern but I wouldn't sew with it. Swedish tracing paper is different as it is more like a thin interfacing that can be used to copy a pattern and also be sewn to make a toile.
