Max is Great!
Great kit, that challenges the minds of children and when completed provides an excellent and entertaining reward. Max has a great personality. A great way to introduce children to robotics.

Heartbroken son
The first one had a faulty switch, so contacted Amazon who sent a replacement. Unfortunately the first one did not get collected. Have been completely unable get hold of anyone for help in returning the item. The view print return label sends me round in circles so I can't even get to the label to print it. I have no return address. The replacement one the switch appears to work, but there are no instructions for downloading the brain so the result is I have two of Meccano Max, neither work and a heart broken son. The product might be great if I could get it to work. I would love someone from Amazon to contact me to get this resolved, but I have no idea how to get hold of anyone. My only course of action left is to leave this review in the hope other people do not end up with the expensive mistake I have.

Great concept. Fun to build but let down by the software.
I might be 37 but I purchased this for myself as a hobby to build, for a break from the mundane tasks of life such as chores and cleaning up after the messy children and husband. I found it quite interesting to build, if not a little tricky at times due to the small spaces of tightening the screws etc. The instructions were also wrong on a couple of occasions, which Meccano could do with resolving. But after about 4-5 hours and without any help from my teenage kids (So proud I didn't have to further increase my teenage sons ego by asking for help!), I had a nice looking robot ready to train... Unfortunately this is where the issues started - Max would not connect to the Max software brain download at all, I tried many fixes from other users in the forum, but without success. Unfortunately without this software max is an expensive £100 statue with his sole purpose of looking sweet but doing nothing, and I have enough people like this in my house already! I cant say I am not disappointed, after 4-5 hours of building and its down to the software that it has failed. I had high hopes...Pot washing robot...Hovering robot...Max was going to do great things. Looks like robots wont be taking over my role as queen household slave anytime soon. Based on this I recommend you try the Mecabrain before building the robot. As for is he any fun...Unfortunately I cant comment, but he was interesting to build. I guess I just got a faulty one.

impressed with what MAX can do once made
excellent present, 10 year old grandson loved it, he's into coding at school so this gave him another challenge. Took most of the day to make and once done we then sat through the programming and watching all the tricks this little Robot can do. Yes it cost £100 but it was well worth it (if only to get grandson away from computer) It is good that its compatible with ipad (not sure about other tablets) just download and away you go. Can't see how any child/teenager wouldn't enjoy having their very own robot lol

Does not work. I bought this for my 9 ...
Does not work. I bought this for my 9 year old son for Christmas, its expensive so was his main present, he was very excited to build it. We spent several days over the Christmas period building it, he did most of it himself with help when he got stuck. He finally finished late one evening to find we needed to download software to make it work....thats when things started to get VERY frustrating. The download crashes repeatedly without doing anything, we've tried downloading on MAC and Windows on two different laptops, NEITHER WORKS. We called spinmaster customer services....after holding for about 20 minutes the guy who answered took our details and said we would be called back, that was about a week ago....we also emailed detailing the issues...we got a response which told us our problem was resolved...it isn't. So we basically have a very expensive model of a robot which doesn't work sitting in the corner. UPDATE called spinmaster again today to be told eveyone was very busy and no one could help me. ANOTHER UPDATE finally got a call from customer services and was talked through the download using a different laptop (the third I tried it on) and now MAX works brilliantly. Updated to 4 stars as I think the first two laptops I used for the download were causing the problem.

Not well made
Not the best and quite difficult for the target lower age. Have had this over a year the box actually game open my son recently finished to find it wasnt actually working properly seems to be some loose connections which we cant resolve. So a costly mistake.

Totalmente recomendable.

READ THIS FIRST if you are going to build this robot
Received this today and finished the build in about 7 hours (with a few short breaks). This is a fantastic robot. We are having a lot of fun with Max already. Really good voice recognition...a bit of a surprise how sophisticated he is in this price range. Here are some problems a lot of people are having that are not defects, but not understanding how to use the instruction booklet as well as some problems understanding the wiring. I see photos of wires too short , etc. Not so. First the criticism that manual is no help in assembly because of too many screws and no way to tell which goes where. On each page of the manual is a photo or illustration of the parts to be assembled and the screws used and where they are placed by size. If you notice in the illustrations there is a drawing of the screw to be used and it is 1 to 1 scale. Just measure each screw right on the drawing...can't go wrong. It helps to separate the screws when you start into groups that are alike (I used plastic throw away cups). Now as to the wiring...the servo for the 'claw' has 2 wires that come from it. You will only use the long one which connects to the head servo short wire. The other wire (short one) is not used. Also, the 2 motors used for the wheels ...both again have 2 wires. Only one of them uses both wires. Check the manual to make sure which one. It will plug into the other motor connector, while the extra wire (short) goes to nothing. Now as to the brain. Build the robot. Make sure and label your wires 1-4 to connect to the back 'brain' module. Makes it a lot easier later to reconnect. Go to the website and download the program for Mac or PC to you computer. Plug in the brain module to your computer via USB. When the program is downloaded, click on it to activate it (you will see a shortcut on your desktop). A screen will open to reveal a simple interface panel. Select the downloads you want on the right. To the center bottom is a down load button. Just push it and wait a couple of minutes as it downloads to the brain box. It shows progress and when completed. Just close the program and unplug Max's brain. Your ready to go.
