Does the joy con grip fit in this case?

No, there is dedicated slots for game cartridges and a space to put accessories like earphones and spare joycons...but the grip is a bit too big for it

Would the controller without the 'joy-cons' fit inside the top pocket?

Tested, and no, it does not close.
